She challenges her audience to rethink and reshape energy access and development plans, pointing out that the net zero 2050 narrative overlooks a major issue: "It assumes everyone just needs cleaner alternatives while ignoring that one in three people still lack any form of modern energy". Despite progress on energy access, energy efficiency and renewable energy, the current pace is not adequate to achieve any of the 2030 targets for SDG7 on Sustainable Energy. One of the reasons for this failure to reach targets is the gender gap. This is frustrating because it is well-recognized that gender equality is key to success in meeting the energy SDG targets. If the world wants to achieve and advance the SDG agenda, then linking SDG5 and SDG7 must be part of a just and inclusive transition.   ENERGIA puts forward five key elements of a gender-just transition linking SDG 7 on sustainable energy, and SDG 5 on gender equality:   ·      Ending energy poverty by targeting women more intentionally ·      Gender-smart investment and financing for women’s businesses ·      Equal opportunities for women’s career advancement ·      An enabling energy policy and market environment ·      An accountability framework   👉 Read about each of these elements in our recent blog:  https://lnkd.in/eiSF2NBz

Practical Action in Kenya and ENERGIA have been pioneers in driving gender equality in the energy sector. A key milestone in this journey has been the Women in Energy Enterprises in Kenya (WEEK) project. As part of this project, Practical Action recently facilitated a gender audit to assess the progress on gender equality in energy, in the semi-autonomous government agencies. The report was presented to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum. While the journey towards gender equality in Kenya’s energy sector has seen substantial progress, continued efforts and commitment are necessary. The audit report recommends that gender work should not just be about meeting contractual obligations but should be intentional. It further highlights that participation of male staff in gender mainstreaming is crucial, as is budget allocation. Read more: 👉 https://lnkd.in/enJy5ZNA

Nearly four in five Africans still cook their meals over open fires and traditional stoves, using wood, charcoal, animal dung, and other polluting fuels. This has dire impacts on health, gender equality and the environment, with women and children bearing the worst consequences. On 14 May, the International Energy Agency hosts a Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, convening global leaders to make 2024 a turning point on this major issue.
