A highlight of #EnlitEurope last week for me was the Think Tank: The Energy Transition Workforce! We discussed the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition workforce of today and tomorrow from different angles: Digitalisation 🖥️ , STEM: matching (academic) skills development and training with industry needs 👩🎓 , Recruitment & Communication 🗣️ , Futureproofing the existing workforce 🚀 , Business strategy and leadership 💡 , Policy and regulation limitations ⚠️ . Since I just finalised my PhD this summer and now explore my work opportunities in the industry, I had the pleasure to sit at the STEM working table. Through an engaging discussion with Leon Pulles, Hande Eryılmaz, Rahul Mishra, Praful Borkar, Richard van Leeuwen, we came to the following key points: Issues: 1.     Engineers, Physicists, and Mathematicians are needed but the unclear career paths and lack of insights in the actual work of the energy sector make “hardcore” tech courses less attractive. 2.     Additionally, to match skills also means to match and be transparent regarding needed educational levels for possible work options. 3.     Thus, to create the workforce at university that is fit to support the energy transition it would need more intense collaboration between industry, academia, and countries. Recommendations: 1.     The industry and all existing workforces should engage with students, become mentors and role models. 2.     Through an increase in options and a combination of collaborative projects, internships, graduate programmes, and on-job education skills can be shaped flexibly and fit for purpose. 3.     There is no one-fits-all and more value should be put on transferable skills!
