Join the panel discussion "Welcome to Barbieland: European Sentiment in the Year of Wars and Elections" on Sunday, 20 October 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00, at the Freedom Games 2024. Featuring Paweł Zerka from the European Council on Foreign Relations, moderated by Agnieszka Lichnerowicz of Radio TOK FM, this event will explore the critical challenges facing Europe. Over the past year, events like the European Parliament election and the war on #Gaza have highlighted the "under-participation" of non-white, Muslim, and eastern European groups. Is the bloc heading toward an ethnic understanding of Europeanness, or is a more inclusive future possible? Abdallah is one of the winners of the How a Library Changed My Life writing competition with his story, 'Home is Where We Keep Our Books.' Born in Rafah, Palestine, and now based in Athens, Greece, Abdallah shares a deeply personal narrative about the role of libraries in finding solace amidst conflict and displacement. In his story, Abdallah recounts his journey from Gaza to Athens and the libraries that became his refuge. This evocative tale is featured in the publication 'How Libraries Thrive – A Guide for Librarians… and Everyone Else in Europe!' launched at If Librarians Ran Europe – The Amsterdam Summit of The Europe Challenge. We recently hosted the If Librarians Ran Europe – The Amsterdam Summit of The Europe Challenge, uniting 57 teams from 24 countries at Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (OBA). The event showcased the incredible role of Europe’s libraries in tackling social isolation, inequality, disinformation, and climate change. With their deep community ties, libraries are vital hubs for innovation and lifelong learning. Looking ahead, we’re excited about potential collaborations with EIT Culture & Creativity to create courses that equip communities with the skills to face modern challenges while fostering creativity and civic engagement. #Europe faces two big challenges: the rise of far-right forces, supported by anti-democratic funding, and the pullback of international donors from democracy work. Now is the time for European philanthropies to step up and invest more in protecting our democracies. On 22 October, join Gauri van Gulik and Finn Heinrich for an online Lunch and Learn on “Scaling Up Democracy Funding in Europe”, hosted by the Democracy Network. They will discuss their research on why more funding is needed and how to find new donors willing to support democracy efforts in Europe. The Democracy Network Lunch and Learn is a series of online conversations that offer funders an informal way to connect, learn from each other’s practices and share strategies. Did you know the Erasmus programme, one of Europe's most renowned innovations, has roots that go back well before its official launch in 1987? While many associate the name with the Dutch humanist, Erasmus is also an acronym for the "EuRopean Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students." This week, we celebrate #ErasmusDays, a global event showcasing the impact of Erasmus+. For students, teachers, trainers, professionals and more generally, all citizens, the #ErasmusDays represent a unique moment to promote the multitude of benefits that result from the programme. Click the link to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dvjY539i Reflecting on the programme’s origins, The European Cultural Foundation played a key role in its early development, partnering with the European Commission in the 1970s to launch the first initiatives in university cooperation and student mobility. 🔥 Kebab: The Dish That’s Dividing Europe 🍢 Love it or hate it, the kebab is at the heart of a culinary culture clash across Europe. 🇩🇪🇹🇷 Is it a Turkish treasure or a German staple? With 1.3 billion kebabs consumed in Germany alone, some say it’s their national dish. Meanwhile, Turkey’s fighting to get it officially recognized like Italy’s pizza or Spain’s jamón. But there’s more than just taste on the line. Rising prices, gentrification, and even far-right politics have turned this late-night snack into a symbol of cultural identity and resistance. From the streets to gourmet menus, the kebab is sparking debates about tradition, immigration, and the future of food. 🍽️ Hungry for more? 🔔 The Ukrainian Cultural Foundation is Open to New Partnerships for Developing and Safeguarding Its Institutional Capacity The Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation has presented its concept of an extended partnership as a response to the challenges posed by the wartime circumstances. The discussion involved representatives of national cultural institutions, private initiatives and international cultural aid projects. Currently we are facing the risk of a severe funding shortage or a complete cessation of financing in 2025❗️Therefore we invite interested parties - foundations, programs and cultural institutions to cooperate and shape the Foundation’s portfolio of partnership programmes for 2025 on a co-financing basis. This approach would follow the successful collaborations we implemented between 2018 and 2021 with partners such as USAID, British Council or Stiftung Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft (EVZ). ✉️ For more details, please contact Volodymyr Vorobey, Supervisory Board member, at vv@ppv.net.ua. The proposed partnership concept aims to secure budget financing and preserve the Foundation’s institutional ensuring the synergy of its development programmes.
