Sulfur-containing functional groups are crucial components found in many pharmaceuticals and natural products. A recent publication highlights the use of biocatalysts in producing optically active sulfoxides: Our research focused on bacterial and thermostable flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) capable of catalyzing the sulfoxidation of various prochiral sulfides. 📖 Read the full article at https://lnkd.in/emp-sQce, and congratulations to the authors Gonzalo de Gonzalo Calvo, Juan Manuel Coto Cid, Nikola Lončar and Marco Fraaije! 🦎 At GECCO Biotech, we provide the necessary enzymatic tools to create target molecules sustainably and cost-effectively. 📣 Fresh out of the press! In a recent project led by Boehringer Ingelheim, we employed our pipeline to clone and produce ketoreductase targets generated through an in silico platform and rational design. This was followed by validating their performance and identifying the best candidate for further improvements. Ketoreductases play a crucial role in synthesizing optically pure alcohols and ketones, important precursors in pharmaceutical production. Despite the typical resource and time constraints in employing biocatalysis industrially, studies like this pave the way for a more sustainable and cost-efficient API synthesis. This promises to have a significant impact on the pharmaceutical industry! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/d-yXvwXw Congratulations to all the authors, and we are grateful to be part of this research collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim, Kiel University and Zymvol Biomodeling.

We are excited to join this collaborative network and look forward to the impactful research ahead!
📣 Exciting news! A consortium led by #ITQBNOVA has received a grant from the 2023 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks! The COMENZE project, led by ITQB NOVA researcher Lígia O. Martins, will train 10 doctoral candidates to engineer enzymes for eco-friendly polymers, paving the way for a sustainable circular economy. 🌍🎓 The collaborative network brings together 8 leading academic institutions (Universidade Nova de Lisboa, University of Groningen, Università di Pavia, Universitat de Girona, Technische Universität Braunschweig, The Silesian University of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, KU Leuven) and 5 highly innovative R&D companies (Zymvol Biomodeling, GECCO Biotech B.V., BASF, Aachen Proteineers GmbH and MetGen). ITQB NOVA researcher Catarina Paquete is also part of a MSCA training programme, led by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, to promote the utilization of energy produced by microorganisms - TRAMPOLINe. We are excited to finally embark on a journey toward #environmentally #friendly processes for producing fatty amines! The FLEXIZYME consortium will tackle biotechnological ways to valorize different residues in the following four years. This project has received funding from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). Thanks to the consortium coordinator ITENE for a productive kick-off meeting and to all the project partners for inspiring discussions! #biotechnology #collaboration
Fatty amines are crucial components in many industries, but traditional production methods raise environmental🌱 concerns. The FLEXIZYME project has emerged to tackle this issue. Funded by Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) , FLEXIZYME is a four years project that ITENE is proud to contribute to and coordinate. This initiative aims to revolutionize fatty amine production through #biotechnology.🔬 ➡️To kick off this project, ITENE hosted the first meeting on June 5th and 6th, welcoming our project partners: Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) Enco Gecco Biotech B.V. Instituto de la Grasa (CSIC) LAVANTIA National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) Process Design Center (PDC) ROELMI HPC Syensqo Rhodia Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Università di Pisa (UNIPI) VOION LAND PRODUCTS (PROIONTA GIS VOIOU) The meeting fostered collaboration🤝, knowledge exchange, and a collective spirit to tackle this challenge, which not only mitigates environmental impact but also contributes to a circular economy by repurposing waste materials. All the best to the new #FLEXIZYME project! #ITENEsustainability

We are enzyme agnostics - our methods and workflows are compatible with a wide range of enzymes rather than being restricted to one particular type. We research to identify the best enzyme for a given task put in front of us by our clients! Nonetheless, #oxidoreductase enzymes will always have a special place in our hearts (and minds). We are proud to share that we have contributed to the chapter on the use of oxidoreductive enzymes for the synthesis of chiral compounds for #drug intermediates, #cosmetic compounds, #polymer building blocks, and many more. The chapter is available here: https://lnkd.in/ernqAS7p The book on Biocatalysis in Asymmetric Synthesis is a must-read for anyone looking to harness enzymes' power. Thanks to the editors Gonzalo de Gonzalo Calvo, Andres R. Alcántara and people at Elsevier for their support. We hope you enjoy reading it!
