During the #SummitoftheFuture, world leaders will adopt the Pact for the Future, laying out how to accelerate existing international commitments, including the #SDGs, and better respond to future challenges. To complement the Pact, participants to the international conference #GLOBALGOALS2024 drew a roadmap with additional strategies and actions to revitalize SDG implementation. 📃 The statement presents reform avenues in relation to (1) Adapting the architecture of global governance; (2) Facilitating national and subnational SDG coordination and governance; (3) Consolidating current goals and recalibrating targets and indicators; and (4) Working towards a paradigm shift in economic policy. 🔗 Access the statement here: https://lnkd.in/dHJW9-5E #GLOBALGOALS2024 #SDGs #SummitoftheFuture #PactfortheFuture #2030Agenda

🔍 Read #GLOBALGOALS2024 Volunteer Peter Gödde's insightful reflection on the key challenges facing the global implementation of the #SDGs addressed at the conference, emphasizing the need to chart a transformative path forward. 👏 Thank you, Peter!
Two weeks ago, I had the chance to volunteer at the GLOBALGOALS2024 conference at Utrecht University on the future of the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). I am very grateful to all the amazing participants and the organising team that made it such an inspiring event. I was sad and frustrated to see how progress towards the goals has been minimal and far off-track to achieving the promises by 2030. Lacking political will for SDG implementation and 'cherry picking' by authorities to selectively report only positive numbers is a major pattern that stood out to me from the various presented studies. Still, connecting and exchanging with the sustainability research community, filled me with a lot of hope and energy to pursue new ideas. Some of my highlights from the conference: - Boniface Dulani stressed the importance of securing basic infrastructures for people, to both alleviate poverty and fight the climate crisis. - Fariborz Zelli urged to find ways of valuing and protecting Environmental Human Rights Defenders in their contributions to sustainability and against the violent threats they face. - David Obura offered a convincing, concise, and ecologically meaningful narrative model of interlinling and localizing the SDGs. - Fronika de Wit and Taís Sonetti-González spurred reflection on diversity and whether the SDGs hinder or enable a world in which many worlds fit.

The #GLOBALGOALS2024 Summer School has concluded today. This program was designed to integrate academic lectures, practical research skills, and experiences with local SDG implementation, fostering an environment for learning and knowledge sharing. Highlights from the final day: - An interdisciplinary lecture by Mara Wendebourg and Yi hyun Kang on the complexities of stakeholder participation followed by a discussion of practical solutions on how to improve it. - Lightning talks and group discussions on the future of sustainability governance with Margarita Gómez and Pamela Chasek, along with insights on youth participation from Bine Liem. - A continuation of futures thinking exercises, led by Fronika de Wit, using backcasting to identify the concrete actions needed to achieve the vision for sustainability governance. We closed out with a final statement outlining key action points, marking the end of the program but not the end of sustainability advocacy. These points will be presented at the #GLOBALGOALS2024 Conference that is starting tomorrow. We hope participants gained new insights, forged new connections, and enjoyed the experience as much as we did organizing it. The learning experience has been mutual, and we are thankful for the diverse perspectives gained from the 26 participants coming from 17 countries.
