    Executive Director, Greenpeace International

🚨 Going into a week that could be a milestone in the history of Greenpeace.  Last week, I was in North Dakota, testifying in an outrageous multimillion-dollar lawsuit—a case with huge stakes not only for the Greenpeace network, but the future of protest and free speech around the world. Nine years after the world watched the Indigenous-led resistance at Standing Rock, representatives from Greenpeace International and Greenpeace entities in the US are defending against a US$300 million lawsuit brought by the company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline. Energy Transfer’s meritless SLAPP is a blatant attempt to rewrite the history of the Indigenous-led resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline, one of the most powerful protests of our time.  SOUNDS FAMILIAR? Because it is. Big Oil is attempting to use lawsuits around the world to crush opposition, trying to intimidate and silence Indigenous peoples, activists, NGOs, and journalists—those who stand up for the environment, clean air, clean water, and their communities. As I was walking the streets of Mandan, ND last week, just blocks away from the state’s largest oil refinery, I saw firsthand how North Dakota runs on oil. Not just in its rigs and refineries, but in the hard work of those who build their lives around it. People whose grit fuels the state’s economy, even as the industry threatens the very land beneath their feet. 💪 We have always believed in the strength of our defence, and trust that justice will ultimately prevail.  But we don’t just defend ourselves—we are also ready to stand up for the entire civic space to protect it from such attacks. That’s why Greenpeace International has filed a lawsuit in Dutch court against Energy Transfer. This case will be the first test of the European Union’s new anti-SLAPP Directive—and I’ll be sharing updates as it unfolds. So as I prepare for a long week, I feel both optimistic and incredibly proud.  💚 Proud to be in solidarity with Indigenous land defenders. ⚖️ Proud of our colleagues and brilliant legal team working day and night. 🇪🇺 Proud of the new European legal framework giving SLAPP victims a way to fight back. 🌍 Proud to be a member of the Greenpeace network which has been standing up for a cleaner, safer world for generations to come. We’ve been doing it for half a century now—and we intend to keep going for at least another. #WeWillNotBeSilenced

  • When you think of Norway, you probably imagine beautiful fjords and breathtaking landscapes. And so this week, we're diving into the waters surrounding Norway and the incredible species that live in them. But, there's a threat looming. As the Norweigan goverment gets ever closer approving Deep Sea Mining contracts in its waters. In this episode of the award-winning Oceans: Life Under Water podcast, Hannah Stitfall speaks to Andreas B. Heide about the rich diversity of Norway's marine life. And Greenpeace Campaigner, Haldis Tjeldflaat Helle, sheds light on the growing threat of Deep Sea Mining. Hannah is also back onboard the Arctic Sunrise, where she talks to Christian Åslund about the environmental changes he's witnessed over the past decade. A special thanks to Aleksander Nordahl, for opening this episode. 🎥 Greenpeace UK is also offering access to some very special bonus content in this series. • Greenpeace condemns the Israeli government's renewal of the attacks on Gaza and the end of the ceasefire.   This situation is adding endless suffering to the millions of displaced people in Gaza and adds to the nightmare of dozens of hostages still detained by Hamas and their families.   Over the past 15 months the relentless violence has claimed tens of thousands of innocent lives – mostly women and children – and pushed Gaza’s infrastructure to collapse. The blockade of essential resources, including food, water, medicine, and fuel, has left civilians facing starvation, disease, and worsening suffering.   Greenpeace repeats its call for: - An immediate, comprehensive, and permanent ceasefire to prevent further loss - The unconditional release of all hostages - The urgent and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza - The unconditional release of all illegally detained civilians - A global embargo on arms sales and transfers that fuel further war crimes - The end of the illegal occupation of Palestine, in line with international law   International law must be upheld, and all parties must return to negotiations that build a just and lasting peace. Greenpeace reiterates its call for a future in which Palestinians and Israelis can live side by side in peace, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and human rights law. https://act.gp/3DCPzPZ     #CeasefireNow

  • Rainbow Warrior's captain Hettie has been stuck in South Korea for 100 days. Her crime'? Speaking out against plastic pollution. Activism is not a crime. Hettie and the ship's crew shouldn't be stuck, but at sea, where they fight for a cleaner planet. 📢 Make your voice heard. Share this post. Sign the petition: bit.ly/3XK6Z3I. Demand their release. Because if activists are not free, who is still fighting for our future? © Angel Pago / Greenpeace

Onze Rainbow Warrior kapitein Hettie zit al 100 dagen vast in Zuid-Korea. Haar ‘misdaad’? © Angel Pago / Greenpeace

It’s been a MONTH since the Namma Metro fare hike. Ridership has crashed. Commuters are suffering. Pollution is rising. Pricing people out of public transport is NOT a mobility solution—it’s a policy failure. And today, on March 9, 2025, exactly a month after the unjust fare hike, commuters took over ‘Namma’ Metro to remind us that it should be OUR metro. The demand is clear—Rollback Metro Fare Hike and make public transport work for the people. 🚊 Un-Fare Hike! Unfair Cities! 🚊 Our cities are not designed for the very people who built them. And the people are fed up. The demand is clear——We need cities that are climate-resilient and people-friendly. Support us to support your cities. #RevokeMetroFareHike #NammaMetro #WhoseMetro #PeoplePower

China's major political event, "Two Sessions," ended last week. Our global policy advisor Yao Zhe told Anika Patel from Carbon Brief that the country's target of reducing energy intensity by 3% per unit of GDP means it's “on track to miss its 14th five-year plan energy intensity target.” https://lnkd.in/eFiK4h6z

  • ❓ What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “gas”? Is it your stove at home or a high-end kitchen? The rising heating bills every winter? Or news reports about gas explosions? The truth is, all of these are connected – and they’re all about fossil gas. The fossil fuel industry is trying to sell us gas as a “clean” bridge energy source. They like to call it “natural” gas – but that’s greenwashing at its best. Here’s the real truth: gas is dirty, dangerous, and far from clean. Fracking, for example, is a destructive process banned in many European countries. Yet Europe still imports fracked gas from other parts of the world like the US – as if the harm it causes to people and nature is somehow more acceptable when it happens elsewhere. And when it comes to climate pollution, fossil gas is often worse than coal. Still, Europe is building more LNG terminals and signing long-term gas contracts that threaten our future. This is unacceptable. We’ve included a few links in the first comment below with more information if you’d like to learn more. In short, the “clean” image of fossil gas is a myth designed to lock us into another era of dirty energy. Gas dependence only benefits big oil and gas companies while harming people, the climate, and nature. So what now? We need to stop gas. It’s time to say no to outdated fossil fuels and yes to affordable renewable energy. Do you agree? Then add your name to our open letter today and share it with your friends. Together, we can #StopFossilGas!  ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dyAggiiy #Queens
