As part of the studies conducted by HINICIO in collaboration with the Mexican-German Energy Partnership and GIZ México on the techno-economic potential of renewable hydrogen production in the states of Nuevo León, Coahuila, Baja California, Chihuahua, Puebla, Tamaulipas, and Guanajuato, a workshop was held in Campeche. This event brought together representatives from state secretaries and the private sector to analyze the challenges and opportunities for developing a hydrogen market in the country, defining the key roles of each stakeholder in its consolidation. Mexico, with its strategic location and close integration with northern countries, holds significant potential for hydrogen exports. As part of our active commitment to advancing hydrogen markets in Latin America, Nuria Hartmann, Manager at HINICIO, participated in the latest edition of Hydrogen Dialogue Latam in São Paulo. The event brought together representatives from emerging hydrogen hubs to present their sustainable development strategies, while key public and private stakeholders discussed recent announcements shaping the growth of Brazil’s Power-to-X market. One major initiative highlighted was the newly established incentive framework for #SAF. Starting with a mandatory 1% SAF blending target in 2027, the quota will increase by 1% per year, reaching 10% by 2037. This progressive policy is crucial for stimulating demand for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen in hard-to-abate sectors. Without sufficient demand, viable business cases for these technologies cannot materialize. We would like to congratulate CertifHy's RFNBO pre-certification process for two major renewable hydrogen projects in Canada: Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) and Nujio'qonik. Project Nujio’qonik, set to become Canada’s first commercial-scale renewable hydrogen and ammonia facility, was audited by TÜV SÜD with support from HINICIO, and EVREC, a project that is estimated to produce nearly 200,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, was audited by Bureau Veritas Group Veritas, also with HINICIO's support. This milestone highlights Canada's commitment to advancing its clean energy sector and sets a benchmark for future transatlantic initiatives. It also positions CertifHy as a leading standard for #RFNBO certification, enabling projects to address potential challenges before the initial certification audit, and ensuring readiness for commercial production and exports to the EU.   At HINICIO we are proud to support these visionary initiatives, which exemplify how strategic planning and adherence to high certification standards can drive projects toward practical applications that achieve sustainable change globally. Ammonia stands out as one of the most traded chemical compounds worldwide, essential for fertilizer production and various applications in the chemical industry. In Colombia, the fertilizer industry is the second-largest hydrogen consumer- a key input for its synthesis- and notably relies on imports. In a recent study conducted by HINICIO and FENOGE for Monomeros Colombo Venezolanos S.A., and supported by The World Bank, we explored the vital role ammonia plays in global decarbonization initiatives. This comprehensive study examines the entire production process, exploring the value chain from renewable electricity generation to the transport and distribution of ammonia, offering an in-depth technical analysis. Colombia possesses substantial potential to enhance its domestic ammonia production by leveraging its abundant renewable hydrogen resources. Joris gave two key Masterclasses, offering valuable insights: 🔹Maximizing Green H2 in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): There’s growing interest in SAF, but also significant concerns regarding CO2 source eligibility and the competitiveness between the Fischer-Tropsch and Methanol-to-Jet pathways. There is a clear need to de-risk eSAF projects to realize to achieve the targets set for its consumption by 2030. 🔹Navigating Renewable and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Markets: Discussions need to shift towards hydrogen derivatives and real-world applications, moving beyond hydrogen alone. Stakeholders are also increasingly focusing on the regulatory and certification landscape, examining how different production methods affect sustainability credentials and ultimately market value. However, the upcoming RED III transposition has added uncertainty, keeping stakeholders waiting for clarity before they can invest. Joris also joined the panel discussion on 'Advancing Mobility: Innovation in Transportation and Distribution Strategies', alongside Dr. Thomas Hillig, Stine Sandermann Justesen, and experts from #OECD.
