Tijdens het Dutch Mountain Film Festival(DMFF.eu) is onze Berghut Halverwege dagelijks geopend. We vertonen doorlopend een selectie films uit het DMFF-programma, perfect om na te genieten van jouw eigen expeditie, met een kop koffie of warme chocomel en bergwaardige hapjes. In de berghut is ook een tentoonstelling van bijzondere kaarten van plekken uit de DMFF-films te zien. Bovendien verblijft modeontwerpster Hsiang-Lin Kuo in de berghut, die inspiratie haalt uit de uitrusting van bergbeklimmers. Wees welkom! Op donderdag 24 oktober, vóór het DMFF officieel van start gaat, kun je al in de sfeer komen met een lezing én twee films, passend bij de locatie in Vaals. Tijdens het DMFF zijn er speciale filmvertoningen en lezingen maar kun je ook deelnemen aan de expeditie naar de top van de Vaalserberg, georganiseerd door Stichting Onbegrensd Avontuur. The Institute of Cartopology explores how maps contribute to today’s challenges.
Over ons
Many challenges of the 21st century have a spatial dimension. The climate change, the housing shortage, the migration crisis. We are continuously using maps to improve our understanding of these spatial challenges. And, we are (finally!) discovering that these complex challenges deserve a versatile approach. Maps cannot be left behind. If they are to remain a window to the outside world and its challenges, they will have to better represent its complexity. The Institute of Cartopology has three fundamental cornerstones on which it builds its activities: Publicly The Institute of Cartopology does not research and experiment on its own and behind closed doors but engages the public as a fundamental functional part of its research activities. In the making The Institute of Cartopology is particularly concerned with how maps are made. Methodology, practice, exercising, and experimentation is therefore at the heart of it. For amateurs and experts Cartopological maps are at the intersection between science and art. But equally at the intersection between practical tool and autonomous object. They are read by professionals to reach the summit and used by walkers on the mountainside. Everyone concerned with the living environment therefore has an interest in the Institute for Cartopology.

We can’t resist taking a moment to look back at MAPAWAY 2024. Here you can see footage of 'Einstein in a Tube', where our visitors became seismologists for a bit by working hands-on with measuring equipment. The Einstein Telescope suddenly felt very close! Three weeks ago, we opened MAPAWAY with the window exhibition ‘the World in Vaals’. The largest collection of donated maps was brought together and displayed. In the meantime, all maps have been carefully stored in the library of the Institute of Cartopology. What remains are the beautiful photos by Paul Salemink. Of course, the library, with more than 200 maps, is always available to visit by appointment. You’re welcome! We did it! And what a special day it was. Young and old folks joined us and the Dutch Mountain Film Festival(DMFF.eu) with maps and surveyors to find, and record, once and for all, the real summit of the Vaalserberg. And we found it: 2 kilometres from the Drielandenpunt, at 339.5 metres, lies the actual summit. ⛰️ A successful expedition and a successful 🔺MAPAWAY🔺! Not only because we found the summit, but also because map enthusiasts and researchers alike came together and took up the challenge to go exploring this weekend. With the meeting point being, of course, our mountain hut halfway up Vaalserberg! From knowledge and art to maps, those who make the maps and the environments that are mapped: it teaches us to look at the world just a little differently. And after last weekend, also how fun and valuable discovering and mapping can be 🗺️ This beautiful map from 1929 (thanks @jack theunissen 🙏🏻) shows well how we have come to experience, document and view the area around the Vaalserberg differently.
