Join us in our mission to regreen African landscapes and cool down the planet. DIG IN.

Over ons

At Justdiggit, we firmly believe in the power of nature to heal our planet. Together with farmers, pastoralists and (local) partners, we bring back vegetation to degraded landscapes in Africa using nature-based solutions so that ecosystems can thrive again, and the Earth’s temperature can cool down. So far we have dug 438,000 water bunds, recovered over 18 million native trees, and restored 433,000 hectares of land for the benefit of people, animals and our planet. We are happy with our impact thus far, but we aren’t nearly done yet. That’s because we’re not only on a mission to regreen landscapes in Africa – we also want to regreen hearts & minds all over the world. We want everyone to know that we can regreen and cool down our beautiful planet, together. To achieve this, we are building an ever-growing global regreening movement, connecting farmers, (I)NGOs, businesses and individuals with a shared vision for a greener and cooler world. Are you ready to join us on this mission? Contact us via partnerships@justdiggit.org and let’s dig in together.

At #Justdiggit, we are dedicated to combating climate change by implementing nature-based solutions. Through our projects, we are actively contributing to 8 Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), including SDG13: Climate Action.💪 By bringing back vegetation, we can enhance ecosystem resilience. Strong landscapes are better equipped to withstand extreme weather conditions, such as droughts and erratic rainfall, reducing the vulnerability of communities that depend on them. Moreover, vegetation plays a crucial role in cooling the local and regional climate and reducing CO2 levels. 🌿 Even more exciting is the potential for large-scale #regreening efforts to significantly combat global warming. But we can’t do this alone. So, are you ready to Dig In and be part of the solution? Together, we can work towards a greener and cooler future for all. 🌍🌱 Visit our website to learn more about how you can support our mission and join the movement. Let’s take action for our planet today! https://lnkd.in/e2zv-Kv5

Studying the effectiveness of soil bunds with Wyss Academy for Nature   The Lorenz butterfly effect depicts that in any complex system, a slight change or activity in the current condition quickly develops into a significant, large-scale transformation in the future over time. In the context of climate mitigation and adaptation, every effort has the potential to contribute to major impact to mitigate against the effects of climate change.   At @Justdiggit, we utilize #NatureBasedSolutions such as #EarthSmiles (semi-circular bunds) in the arid and semi-arid regions. The soil bunds help retain water for a much longer period, enhancing water infiltration and soil moisture retention. This is very essential for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in these environments. The availability of moisture promotes vegetation growth within the bunds, which in turn spread to the surrounding area. Vegetation and soil moisture contribute to moisture recycling and latent heat of evaporation, potentially resulting in micro-scale cooling effect that can eventually will have a significant impact at a meso-scale level.   To provide empirical evidence, #Justdiggit has partnered with @WyssAcademy to examine the effectiveness of Earth Smiles dug in Chyulu, Kenya. Together with our local partner (MWCT), we have installed a network of data loggers in Chyulu landscapes to collect robust data on sub-surface soil moisture and temperature at depths of up to 60 cm. This will aid in examining the long-term performance of soil bunds in improving climate resilience and local climate buffering.   The findings from this research project will be crucial in conducting a comparative analysis with the outcome from a similar project in Nkirashi, Nanyuki-Kenya. The insights obtained from the two projects, will inform the purpose of soil bunds in improving local ecosystems, climate, and soil health while combating desertification. These results will be will be vital in guiding future land restoration practices and policy decisions in arid and semi-arid environments, thus stressing the importance of deploying nature-based solutions, as every effort counts in combating climate change.   This partnership is valuable in providing evidence based decision making to Sustainable Land Management. Conducting this research in our target restoration sites allows us to learn, gather scientific evidence and further refine and scale these interventions. #Justdiggti is proud to collaborate with #WyssAcademy on this project. A big shout-out to the Wyss Academy team for their support providing tools, materials and technical expertise.   We can’t wait for the first measurements to come in!

The most biodiverse habitat on Earth? Soil! 🌱 🐛 🦠 Did you know that 60% of all species on Earth thrive just beneath our feet, in soil?? This unassuming hero is not only essential for plant growth but also acts as a biodiversity haven, a natural water filter, and a crucial balance for ecosystems. But in Kenya, the soil—and all the life it supports—is in trouble. Rising global temperatures are leading to longer droughts and unpredictable rain patterns, causing serious problems for both the land and the people. The soil has become so dry and damaged that it can hardly support any life. That’s why, for our 20th Planet Wild mission, we’ve partnered up with Justdiggit to help restore the soil. How? By digging half-moon-shaped holes called bunds, and adding native grass seeds, which now have the water they need to sprout, kickstarting the regreening process. It’s a simple yet powerful method that restores the soil, captures water, and has the potential to regreen massive areas of barren land. Check it out to learn more about the method and our support: https://lnkd.in/dTmQBsHc A big thank-you goes to our incredible community that made this mission possible!
