Re-wilding the oceans

Over ons

We grow giant kelp forests around the globe to boost the health of the oceans and to store CO2. We harvest only the kelp canopy. From this we make biostimulants, a product that allows farmers to drastically reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers. Biostimulants increase: -plants ability to tolerate climactic stress and -yields. WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? Per year, humanity is using natural capital 1.7 times as fast as Earth can renew it. For our futures sake, this must change. Cost-effective, long term and environmentally sustainable alternatives must be found to restore the planet to equilibrium, or even abundance. Why is Kelp Blue an answer? Giant Kelp one of the fastest growing organism on the planet and is well suited for use in a range of products from high quality pharma/neutraceuticals to fertiliser, animal feed, dietary supplements and textiles. Growing the marketplace for existing kelp products as well as using giant kelp derivatives to displace environmentally damaging alternatives will help restore the planets equilibrium; growing kelp requires no fertilisers, no pesticides, no land and no fresh water. But more importantly, it has the ability to draw down more CO2 than terrestrial forests while boosting marine biodiversity and improving fish stocks. Why KELP BLUE? We are passionate about scaling a profitable nature-based solution that will help reverse climate change. Our model can quickly grow across different markets helping to change the course of multiple industries from being environmentally damaging to being environmentally positive.

Giant kelp can regenerate land and sea 🏋♂️ Last week, our very own Valentin Pitiot sat down with ffinlo Costain, Chief Editor at 8point9.com, to dive deep into the benefits of giant kelp. They explored how it acts as an ecosystem engineer, why we sustainably harvest only the top 10% of our seaweed forests, and how we’re making a positive impact. But the spotlight was on StimBlue+! Our flagship biostimulant, made from macrocystis pyrifera (type of brown seaweed), is perfect for home and garden plants. Want to see your plants flourish naturally? 🌱 Grab your bottle today from our webshop! 🛒 Shop now: https://lnkd.in/eqbJzjWq 🎥 Watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/e8S7kGnk

Chief Editor of 8point9.com. Farm Gate podcast / Founder, Food & Global Security Network. TEDx Speaker: We can’t solve the climate crisis without cows

🌿 🐚 🐟 "Giant kelp works as an ecosystem engineer" - Valentin Pitiot, Kelp Blue’s Head of Projects, told me, “Kelp has an ability to sequester vast amounts of carbon, forever. Kelp also benefits habitat provision: where you have kelp you usually have life. You can see these beautiful microcities working as an ecosystem engineer, providing habitats for marine biodiversity. Kelp also protects against coastal erosion, by reducing the wave energy by up to 60 per cent.” 🌿 Kelp is seeded on ropes anchored between the seabed and the surface, but Kelp Blue says that their approach is unusual. Instead of harvesting their kelp right down to the roots, they only take what’s floating on the surface of the water. The biomass around the rope anchors is left alone, aiding swift plant regeneration. 🌿 Once harvested, the crop is processed in a refinery for products such as #StimBlue, a natural booster for plants. The company is also exploring the development of sustainable products derived from seaweed, including bio-leathers, textiles, and various compounds like alginates and fucoidans, which have applications in the food, health and pharmaceutical sectors. 👨🌾 Stim Blue is the company’s flagship product. Where soils are damaged, it works to rapidly restore soil health and improve fertility. Pitiot said, “Our Stim Blue biostimulant offers farmers a strong return on investment by decreasing the need for synthetic fertilisers. Stim Blue boosts soil health and crop productivity and helps farmers shift to regenerative agriculture, without sacrificing yield – it enhances the soil structure and creates crop resilience.” 🐟 🐚 🪸 The strong ecological performance of kelp also provides an opportunity to establish nature-based income streams. Pitiot said, “Carbon credits are something we could tap into, but biodiversity credits are a huge one. So far we’ve seen more than 800 species in our kelp forests. When we started to have the seaweed, we saw the kelp lice coming to the kelp forest and eating everything. We were really scared, but instantly we started to see fish coming to eat the kelp lice, and then bigger fish coming to eat the smaller fish. Now the ecosystems are flourishing, which is great. In the future we hope to get access to biodiversity credits.” 🦞 Watch our full interview with Valentin Pitiot here: https://lnkd.in/erMn4BJT

Kelpies Hilinganye Andreas and Michael Mateus were present at the Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa AASA conference at Stellenbosch University last week 🌊 A great sucess. Kelpie Hilinganye took the stage and presented the development of a large-scale offshore kelp cultivation operation in Southern Namibian waters with Kelp Blue as case study. She presented our work and milestones, including our research on seaweed seedbanks. Thank you for the inspiring conversations, among others with leading industry experts like Prof. John Bolton and Henk Stander. Kelpies say it best! "Overall, the conference was a fantastic networking platform, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities within the aquaculture industry. It was an eye-opening experience, and I’m proud to be among the few 'Industrial Researchers' advancing this field in Southern Africa." Hilinganye Andreas Always inspiring to see Kelpies take the stage. Well done Hillinganye and Michael!

This is incredible 😍 Kelp Blue has been testing their kelp-based biostimulants (StimBlue+) with farmers around the world, and the results are... astounding! Here’s one example: trials in Spain on table grapes 🍇 showed that applying 6L per hectare resulted in a 36% increase in yields over the control plot. That’s an extra €7000 worth of grapes per hectare, for only €100 worth of StimBlue+. But for me, the most exciting part isn’t just the yield increase! It comes with some awesome extra benefits: 𝟷﹚ The biostimulant + alginate pellets have a positive impact on soil life and structure. They boost the farm’s resilience to extreme weather events like floods and droughts. Plus, they reduce farmers' reliance on chemical fertilizers & pesticides, making it a fantastic tool for farmers transitioning to regenerative practices 🌿 𝟸﹚ Growing giant kelp significantly contributes to marine ecosystem restoration. Kelp Blue has been monitoring their kelp forests, and these areas have gone from just 6 species to over 500 🐙 𝟹﹚ Fighting eutrophication: Nutrient runoff from farms is a huge problem for rivers and coastal regions, causing harmful algae blooms that suffocate ecosystems. Kelp acts as a sponge, capturing nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and heavy metals. These elements can then be returned to the fields via pellets and biostimulants, closing the loop ✨ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Listen to the fascinating conversations I had with Caroline Slootweg & Valentin Pitiot on the latest Deep Seed podcast episodes to find out more! Keep on regenerating ❤️ Raphael Esterhazy
