Innovative, sustainable and design-driven knitwear solutions
Over ons
KNITWEAR LAB develops smart technological applications for knitwear. At our LAB in Almere - the Netherlands, our team of programmers and designers develops prototypes and run small productions. Our main production inquiries will be handled through our production LAB in Istanbul, Turkey, which is specialized in producing high-end knitwear in small quantities. Our production team of experienced professionals uses their exceptional craftsmanship to create high-end knitwear. Our knitwear specialists combine material research with latest knitwear technologies, which results in development of smart knitwear solutions. A combination of technological innovation and a design-driven perspective is what makes KNITWEAR LAB truly unique. Sustainable Projects – We have a progressive vision on sustainability. At KNITWEAR LAB we are constantly developing ethical knitwear, that can be made from biodegradable materials, regenerated and certified yarns, or just very beautiful long-lasting materials. Moreover, we make an emphasis on zero-waste production methods. With use of 3D knitting techniques, we are capable of knitting designs entirely out of one piece, without any waste. It is our responsibility to educate our clients on the impact their production has on our ecosystem. Virtual Knitting – Virtual Knitting by KNITWEAR LAB is a revolutionary method of industrial knitwear development: a connection between virtual and material (physical) knitting, which creates a whole new world for sustainable, cost-efficient and design-driven sample development and knitwear production. Virtual Knitting assists the customers in improving the designs on an early stage to create producible and realistic collections, simplify the design iteration process and to show multiple real life colourways. With use of KNITWEAR LAB’s extensive knitwear knowledge combined with the latest 3D software and Stoll Create Plus, a massive waste from the sample and pre-production stages can be reduced.

KNITWEAR LAB and Virtual Knitting had the past weeks an incredible experience as Designers-in-Residence at the Department of Cornell University - College of Human Ecology - Cornell Human Centered Design KNITWEAR LAB, has always been committed to advancing knitwear technology. Virtual Knitting was created within that vision to lead the way in Digital Product Creation for flatbed knitting, a field we’re passionate about developing. It’s clear that the balance between craft and digital knowledge is central to our work. Industrial crafts are not only essential for preserving tactile knowledge but are also crucial for keeping our industries running. Virtual Knitting exists within KNITWEAR LAB to maintain that close connection to physical knitwear while embracing new digital technologies. The interplay of both is what drives innovation in our field. Thijs Verhaar, together with Lyske Gais de Bildt, brought their work from KNITWEAR LAB and Virtual Knitting into the creative and academic environment of the Department of Cornell University - College of Human Ecology - Cornell Human Centered Design They also served as visiting critics, provided valuable insights as speakers in the workshops, and shared insights from their work at Virtual Knitting and KNITWEAR LAB into the academic setting. The residency has been filled with insightful conversations, inspiring connections, and hands-on experiences. As part of the residency, Thijs and Lyske hosted a small exhibition in the Martha Van Rensselaer Hall. KNITWEAR LAB’s own exhibition showcased beautiful knitwear, digital renders, and behind-the-scenes insights into the challenges of Virtual Knitting. A big thank you to Melissa Conroy for inviting us to be part of this incredible experience and for giving us a wonderful tour of the department. To Juan P Hinestroza, Ph.D., interim chair, whose insightful discussion helped shape our approach for the weeks. We are currently enjoying an incredible experience as Designers-in-Residence at the Department of Human Centered Design, Cornell University - College of Human Ecology, filled with insightful conversations, inspiring connections, and hands-on experiences. I’m here with Thijs Verhaar, and together, we’re excited to bring our work from KNITWEAR LAB and Virtual Knitting into this creative and academic environment. Reflecting on this past week, it’s clear that the balance between craft and digital knowledge is central to our work. Industrial crafts are not only essential for preserving tactile knowledge but are also needed to keep our industries running. Virtual Knitting exists within KNITWEAR LAB to maintain that close connection to physical knitwear while embracing new digital technologies. The interplay of both is what drives innovation in our field. This past week has been an incredible mix of conversations and experiences that highlight that balance. We started by setting up our exhibition in the Martha Van Rensselaer Hall gallery, with thanks to Melissa Conroy for giving us a wonderful tour of the department and to Juan P Hinestroza, Ph.D., interim chair, whose insightful discussion helped shape our approach for the coming weeks. We had the opportunity to meet the talented knitwear students in Melissa Conroy’s knitwear design class and the Fashion Product Management students of Fran Kozen. Sharing our insights on knitwear and digital product creation with them was energizing, and we hope to have left a lasting impression as they move forward in their careers. The week also brought fascinating interdisciplinary exchanges, like a lunch with Saleh Kalantari, where we discussed his research on VR and its applications in the built environment. Later, a deep conversation with Larissa Shepherd led to thoughtful exchanges about sustainability in fashion, the challenges of data collection, and how we can educate future professionals to make more sustainable decisions. One of the highlights was visiting the Cornell Fashion and Textile Collection with Catherine Kueffer Blumenkamp. Seeing garments that manipulated fabric direction inspired us to consider how similar techniques could be applied to knitwear. The day concluded with the opening of our exhibition, and we’ve been thrilled to see students continually returning with new friends to explore our work. We also had the pleasure of engaging with Leighton Beaman’s students in the Magnifying Small Spaces Studio class. It made me reflect on my own journey from spatial design to fashion, realizing that what I enjoy most is the dimensionality of garments. It’s not just the technical 3D modeling that draws me in—garments themselves are spatial objects, and I find that truly fascinating. We’re looking forward to the coming week and invite anyone in the area to stop by and engage with us at the gallery!
