Mission
The Law Centre for Health and Life strives to understand how law, regulation and policy impact on health and in turn, how health, including environmental health and technological advances in the field of health, impacts law and policy.
Foundation
The Centre works from a strong foundation in bioethical values and fundamental rights. The Centre’s work impacts multiple levels of society by supporting innovative legal solutions at local, national, European and international level that protect vulnerable citizens in the face of public, medical, and industrial powers in the field of health and environmental health challenges.
Approach
The Law Centre for Health and Life is founded on curiosity-driven research, autonomy, and academic freedom. The Centre fosters an inclusive academic environment with diverse disciplinary knowledge and skill sets from a range of legal fields. In our work we connect with other disciplines such as (bio)medicine, environmental sciences, public health and epidemiology, policy and governance, political science, anthropology and sociology, economics, and other fields. The Law Centre for Health & Life seeks new knowledge through the use of multi- and interdisciplinary research methods.
The Law Centre for Health and Life achieves its goals through:
- High impact research that the Centre disseminates to audiences within and beyond the legal world with legal findings relevant to their spheres of work.
- Societal connection by engaging closely with key stakeholders in the field of health and health-related policy.
- Education excellence by connecting groundbreaking research to teaching in the newly accredited UvA Master Programme on Health Law and through contributions to (interdisciplinary) health and law programs within the UvA.
