A big congratulations to the Dutch Legal Design Lab for hosting an awesome event yesterday, "Connecting Law, Design & Tech: To Design Just Societies"! Congratulations must be given to the original co-founders Lieke Beelen, 🦋Marisa Monteiro Borsboom, Lucien Stöpler, Anna Posthumus Meyjes, Kim Raad, and Karol Valencia for persisting with a project that is finally receiving more institutional support. It was wonderful to see both the dean of TU Delft | Industrial Design Engineering and Peter Lloyd offer their support during this event. Initiatives like this bridge the divide between lawyers, designers, and engineers to bring together law, design, and tech to tackle real-world issues. In this spirit of collaboration, we're super excited about the potential for future collaborations between our groups. Let's keep the momentum going and work together to drive positive change in our society. One of the more challenging aspects of digitising contracts (making then computable) is understanding how to assemble a contract from a reusable set of clauses. There is inherent tension between the notion of a clause as an atomic reusable snippet of text, and the assumptions that a clause makes about its host contract, or the other clauses that must be present in the contract. Last week I published a blog post about Inkster’s Law. This week I am following up on that post with what ChatGPT made of it over the past week and the hallucinations it had in the process: https://lnkd.in/ecQ4hG_C Inkster’s Law is the 2:1 ratio of time needed to check for accuracy of AI generated material. It is named after me and was a term coined by Gav Ward. In comments on last week’s blog post, Ann Turner-Maynard said: "What’s the probability that Inkster’s Law will have been quoted in an essay on AI by the end of the week." Jane Clemetson replied: "Indeed – will look out for it." I joined in: "Probably won’t be long before ChatGPT is quoting it!" It then occurred to me that perhaps I should check in with ChatGPT daily to see if and when it picked up on Inkster’s Law. So I did that over the past week. To begin with it had no idea so just made things up. It imagined it had something to do with Inksters office, The Inksterplex, which it hallucinated as having "a law library, a conference centre, a cafe, and a gallery". It created two new law firms with "Inkster" in their name: one in London and the other in Manchester. It decided my blog, The Time Blawg, was written by a David Macdonald. It brought Mitch Kowalski into the mix with references to #plugplaylaw. All in all it reconfirmed that it would take at least twice as long to check for the accuracy of AI generated material than it would to create that material from first principles. I dread to think what it will now come up with when it scrapes my latest blog post. It will probably take all of its hallucinations, as quoted by me, as now being genuine and double down on them and reference them with confidence as being reality! And that will make Inkster’s Law all the more relevant: Inkster’s Law: The 2:1 ratio of time needed to check for accuracy of AI generated material. What do you think? There are many potential benefits to this development and early case studies like Estonia's court information system (KIS2) could prove invaluable to other countries looking to bring their judiciary online.
