We started this week with a great opportunity to show members of parliament Jan Paternotte and Joost Sneller from D66 around Leiden Bio Science Park. The goal? To give them a clear view of the important work happening here and how enterpreneurs in our ecosystem help shape the future of health! We started at Leiden Centraal, took a quick bike ride with seasoned park guides Rijk van Walsem from Gemeente Leiden and Nick Veringmeier from Leiden Bio Science Park, and stopped at Naturalis Biodiversity Center to highlight some of the key research and discoveries that have come out of the park including our iconic bull Herman. Our next stop was the core of the Bio Science Park, where we discussed the various aspects of drug manufacturing, clinically testing new medicines, preparing for pandemics, and developing advanced therapies. Arriving at Kadans Science Partner' Plus Ultra, director Leiden Bio Science Park Esther Peters shared an insightful introduction to the ecosystem and its strategic importance. Leyden Labs , and Meatable presented their ideas and projects. These pitches provided concrete examples of how innovative thinking at the park leads to real-world solutions. Why do we host these visits? Because it’s crucial for policymakers to see firsthand how scientific research and innovation drive progress. These interactions help build the understanding and support needed to continue developing impactful solutions in health and medicine. These tours serve as a valuable connection between the world of science and the politics, showing how they can work together to shape the future of health. Thank you for joining the tour! When the sun is out in the Netherlands, there's nothing better than enjoying a lunch break outside at Leiden Bio Science Park! Take a moment to grab a bite at Lab071 Bar & Kitchen Leiden, where the former anatomical laboratory of Leiden University once stood, or take a stroll near the Rob Schilperoort Memorial. Who’s Rob Schilperoort you may ask? Only a Professor of Molecular Biology who played a key role in the creation of Leiden Bio Science Park in 1984. Craving iced coffee? Check out Vrij, where they've created a welcoming space with a private terrace on top of the café. It’s perfect for brainstorming sessions, meetings, or a casual catch-up with colleagues. Did you know that De Stal, a café just across from Naturalis Biodiversity Center, was once the stable of the world’s first transgenic bovine? It’s amazing how this historic spot has transformed into a place to enjoy your lunch! Even if you only have 5 minutes, a quick break in the park outside Leiden University Medical Center or near the BioPartner Leiden building can be a refreshing way to recharge. Our community is about more than just science—it’s also about these simple pleasures that bring us together. Let’s celebrate the little things and the vibrant community we’re part of. This is how we like to spend our lunch breaks. What are your favorite spots?
