Hamburg Bahrenfeld has it all: a diverse history, a renowned university and the impressive Volkspark, the city's largest park. LOLA Landscape Architects vision for the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld design competition seamlessly integrates science with nature. In partnership with Mandaworks, we crafted a proposal that enhances the connection between the new district and the natural environment, while establishing strong links to surrounding areas. As one of Hamburg’s most ambitious projects, Science City Hamburg aims to become a central hub for scientific academia and housing. Our proposal connects existing and currently separate areas, and creates a new acceleration point for Bahrenfeld. On the site of the former trotting track, science, neighborhood and landscape merge into a new urban identity. The space for the university offers room to grow, brings the Volkspark into the district and creates new residential qualities and meeting places for the neighborhood. Our congratulations to Cobe on winning the competition, as well as to the other finalists. Over ons
LOLA landscape architects is an office for progressive landscape architecture. LOLA (LOst LAndscapes) studies and designs landscapes that are forgotten, have degraded, are derelict or on the verge of change. LOLA has got an optimistic and conceptual approach to these landscapes and a fascination for new spatial phenomena. Whether in the city, the outskirts or the countryside, we aim to design sublime places that are beautiful, surprising and thriving. LOLA believes in a combination of continuous research, experiment and design. We match knowledge of landscapes and of large-scale ecosystems with contemporary ideas about people, space and nature. Being designers with an integrated approach to projects, we continuously partner with other offices and institutions with specific knowledge and experience. LOLA was founded in 2006 by the landscape architects Eric-Jan Pleijster, Cees van der Veeken and Peter Veenstra. A total of 20 people now work in the office, ranging from landscape architects to architects and urban designers. The office is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, but operates worldwide for governments, provinces, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and project developers. LOLA designs public spaces like parks and squares, works on redevelopment plans in city and countryside, and develops landscape transformation strategies and spatial researches. Archello has revealed their longlist for the second annual Archello Awards program, and we are happy that the LOLA Landscape Architects designed Meelfabriek garden made it to the longlist for Park of the Year! For the design of the garden of De Meelfabriek Leiden, LOLA worked closely with garden designer Piet Oudolf. Together we created a green oasis at the heart of the of the industrial heritage setting of former flour factory, a landmark complex in the city of Leiden and the Singelpark. The garden is a lush planted and peaceful place. Carefully framed, it is designed as a large ‘nature painting’. Every season reveals a new beautiful colors and shapes, utilizing the seasonal dynamics in its best interest. With the Archello Awards, Archello celebrates the very best landscape and architecture projects, building products and firms. For the 2024 edition there were over 1,000 entries. Last chance! Visit the Nieuwe Vroenten presentation at the Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. The IABR exhibition at the Nieuwe Instituut is open for the public till the 13th of October. Nieuwe Vroenten breaks through the inertia of the Dutch rural landscape, particularly in regions dominated by industrial farming. The project envisions transforming 1,000 hectares of rural land into healthy, sustainable landscape that combines food production with energy generation, nature and living spaces. This shift will increase calorie productivity, which in turn will free up a third of the land for conversion to nature, creating space for 2,000 homes of various types. Next stop is the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven that will be held from 19 to 27 October 2024. ‘Into the Woods 2024’ is open for registration! Independent School for the City organizes a one-week studio exploring strategies for radically greening our cities by creating a micro forest. The course takes place from 21 - 25 October 2024 and is being led by Peter Veenstra (LOLA Landscape Architects) and Ronald Buiting (Buiting Advies BV). Planting trees has become a popular initiative to combat climate change and increase biodiversity. While expanding, regenerating, and rewilding large natural areas are crucial strategies for creating diverse and healthy carbon-storing ecosystems, there are also many reasons to radically green our urban areas. Trees capture CO2 and clean the air, cool cities, help regulate ecosystems, improve our health, and foster a sense of well-being. With ‘Into The Woods’, Peter, Ronald and Independent School for the City build upon the experiences from the previous edition. Following an ecological and hands-on approach, utilizing nature's reproductive processes by harvesting and replanting seedlings. We will create our own micro forest, employing a layered approach from the soil to the treetops, with a specific focus on the biodiversity of what we are planting. Register before 7 October 2024! More info and Tickets on the Independent School for the City website. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eqb5FZHc

Superbloei takes over the city. The Gemeente Arnhem presented an ambitious vision for a radical greening of the city. Commissioned by the municipality, LOLA Landscape Architects studied the South-East Canal of Arnhem, and made several proposals for greening this area and for steps to achieve an overarching green structure. One of these proposals is ‘Superbloei’ (Super Blossom), a project that aims to remove the pavement and increase the biodiversity. LOLA invited garden and landscape architect Arjan Boekel of Coöperatie De Bloeimeesters to create a temporary planting scheme that evolves from a lush field of flowers to a robust ecological border. Initially, perennials are planted to attract immediate attention, followed by flowering annuals the following season. What started as a temporary public garden to showcase Arnhem’s green ambitions, became a 'growing garden' with a colourful explosion of flowers in the first year, and evolved into a permanent garden that is connected to the local ecology.
