“Once we understand the complex interactions between the social, economic and political factors that affect health, we understand that one discipline can’t provide a solution”. For true change, collaboration across disciplines is key. Students who enrol in the Global Health master’s learn how to work together interdisciplinary and critically reflect on existing healthcare systems. Emma Goslin is combining Global Health and Medicine to address health inequities caused by global challenges, such as climate change and migration. Want to know more? An estimated 1.3 million people in the Netherlands have prediabetes, a condition which precedes type 2 diabetes. Probably half of these people will actually develop diabetes. These numbers are alarming, says Miranda Schram. She researches diabetes, focusing on both cardiovascular and mental health aspects. For this, she uses data from The Maastricht Study, of which she is one of the founders. Miranda: "Prevention is our most urgent task, action is needed from the government and healthcare." 💡 Want to know more? https://lnkd.in/e87bXiFV Maastricht University Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) MHeNs - Mental Health and Neuroscience Research Institute Maastricht UMC+ De Maastricht Studie Erasmus MC Diabetes Fonds

Every year, MSV Pulse the study association for Medicine students, organises the ‘clinician of the year’ election. With this election, students in the master's programme Medicine put specialists and residents in the spotlight who make a special effort to teach medical students, both inside and outside the MUMC+. This way, they express their appreciation for their efforts and guidance during their internships. The students nominated several MUMC+ graduates in various categories: Tim Pruimboom, Frank van Leersum, Pip Vlaanderen, Sjoerd Timmermans, Tanguy Dewaele, Veerle Veth and Christine van der Leeuw. In the end, Frank van Leersum and Veerle Veth won the title Clinician of the Year in their category. Myriam de Ruijter won the mentor of the year award.

Of all Dutch provinces, Limburg scores the lowest on 'self-reported health' - how healthy people feel. On the number of chronic diseases per individual, Limburg scores very high. Veerle van Zelst - de Vries wants to contribute to changing these numbers. She is programme director Prevention and Vitality, which aims to create societal impact in Limburg and beyond. "When we are recognised as an important partner in our region for prevention and vitality, and our knowledge is applied in society, I will be very happy." Want to know more? It leads to several physical and mental health issues, such as congenital heart defects, immune system problems, cognitive issues and an increased risk of psychosis. Assistant professor and psychologist Claudia Vingerhoets researches the psychiatric aspects and cognitive functioning of patients with 22q11 deletion syndrome. "The syndrome has a major impact on the lives of patients and their families." 💡 Want to know more? https://lnkd.in/egk_eeU9 MHeNs - Mental Health and Neuroscience Research Institute Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience | Maastricht University Maastricht University Maastricht UMC+ 's Heeren Loo Brain Awareness Week #22q11 #raredisease #cognitivedisorders #psychosis #expertisecenter22q11

Your input makes the difference! Apply now for the FHML Faculty Council or University Council. Do you want to think about and decide on important policy issues within our Faculty and UM? This is your chance! From 10 to 14 March, you can apply for the FHML Faculty Council and the University Council. Kim, our Faculty Council Secretary, talks about her experiences within the Council.
Nice to meet you: Kim Luijten - secretary of the FHML Faculty Council At the Maastricht University Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) students and staff strive to make a difference. For instance, Renee explores how we can prepare students for interprofessional collaboration and Herma works on support for teaching staff. At UM, each faculty has a representative body. The faculty council consists of 18 passionate students and staff members and acts as a voice for the entire faculty. But how do 18 people represent Maastricht University's largest faculty? According to Kim Luijten, this is achieved by having a council that represents the faculty and its staff in all its facets. In general, there is less research on and less funding for diseases in which women are overrepresented, such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women are also often excluded from studies if they are pregnant, use contraception, or because of their menstrual cycle. Research on non-binary or intersex people is also severely underfunded. Emma de Brabander hopes to raise awareness for these issues and to encourage researchers to take sex and gender into account in their studies. “For researchers, it is often easier to exclude women, but that does not make your research any better.” 💡Want to know more? https://lnkd.in/ePmkFVfp Maastricht University MHeNs - Mental Health and Neuroscience Research Institute Maastricht UMC+

Congratulations to Judith Sluimer, who is awarded a Vici grant by NWO (Dutch Research Council)🎉 Of the 43 researchers who received a Vici grant, she was the only one from Maastricht University. Judith demonstrated that the first signs of vascular wall ageing are visible in the outer layer of the blood vessel, although research and treatments so far have focused on the inner layer. She expects that her research will lead to new treatment possibilities for vascular ageing and resulting cardiovascular diseases.🫀 Read more about her work 👇 Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) Maastricht UMC+ Heart+Vascular Center/Maastricht UMC+
