Even with the rise of new digital payment solutions, online shopping still faces challenges and frictions. Consumers want security and convenience, and they don’t want to make a trade-off. When Mastercard thinks about cybersecurity, our mission is clear - trust is our business. With Mastercard Click to Pay there’s no compromise, our priority is delivering on a promise. Valentine’s day is here, and it’s the perfect time for romance scammers to strike. According to Nasdaq, romance scams and other confidence schemes cost $3. 8 billion globally last year. And from deepfakes of celebrities to people finding love with AI chatbots, emerging tech is making spotting a scam that much harder. With that in mind, sharing some tips from Mastercard to avoid becoming a victim this year: 1. Spot the red flags: Scammers often try to create an emotional connection and use urgent sob stories or love bombing to manipulate you. Take a moment to evaluate the money or information they're asking you to part with. 2. Challenge their identity: Second-guessing can save you from an fraudster. Find a way to verify their identity and note any inconsistencies in their stories. 3. Avoid sharing personal information: If you haven't met your sweetheart in person, avoid sharing details that could compromise your accounts. They don't need your address, financial information, or even year of birth! 4. Don't send money: Scammers often ask for money in ways that are difficult to trace and recover. Challenge the platforms they are requesting these from, and ensure the account they're asking you to send to is authentic! 5: Report quickly: If you suspect you've been scammed, report it immediately to the dating site or app, as well as to your bank using the contact information on the back of your card.
