Looking back on the CAA International Cocoa Conference! 🌍 Eric Logtens and Sann Carrière had a valuable opportunity to connect with key stakeholders as we prepared for our trip to Ghana. The conference provided insight into the potential for locally producing partitioning wall systems from cocoa residuals—a crucial step in our mission to develop sustainable building solutions with locally sourced materials. Excited to see how these discussions shape our future projects! #materialinnovation #cocoa #regenerativeeconomy #buildingmaterials #BPF Reach out via hello@materialinnovation.center to get involved! Over ons
MIC, the Material Innovation Center, is concerned with connecting a collective of universities, research institutions, businesses, entrepreneurs, governments, and other stakeholders to achieve innovation on materials, whilst working with new materials and technologies that valorise secondary resources and enhance waste prevention. How we work Our team strives to do the above by integrating competences, skills, experiences that lead to a unique set of expertise to support the quantification of impacts of the circular use of materials and products, hence the recovery of materials and products. MIC builds on and shares learnings across the community of makers coming together to think, craft, play, work, learn, fail, persist and try out new techniques with high quality circular materials and machines.

🌍𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹♻️ The recently published Global Circularity Protocol for Business Landscape Analysis highlights the critical gaps and opportunities in the circular economy, offering valuable guidance for businesses and policymakers alike. As Material Innovation Center continues to champion sustainable practices, this report underscores the importance of integrating circular economy principles into business models to drive systemic change. One of the key takeaways is the need for standardized metrics and frameworks to measure and disclose circularity efforts effectively. The Global Circularity Protocol (GCP), led by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, aims to fill this gap by providing a unified global framework. This initiative will guide companies in setting targets, measuring progress, and developing policies that promote a regenerative economy. At MIC, we’re committed to aligning our strategies with these evolving standards, ensuring that our efforts contribute to a more sustainable and circular future. The insights from this report will be invaluable as we navigate the complexities of circularity and strive for greater impact. For those interested in the challenges, opportunities, and design recommendations outlined in the GCP, read the full Landscape Analysis and its Summary Report through the link below. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Innovation #MIC #GlobalCircularityProtocol #ResourceEfficiency #RegenerativeEconomy

🌍 Exploring Circular Economy in Africa: A Policy Perspective 🌱 A recent article delves into the transformative potential of the Circular Economy (CE) in Africa, emphasizing the need for responsible, inclusive, and socially just transitions. It highlights the technical, geopolitical, and social factors essential for enabling this shift, and explores how these can contribute to effective policy measures. Key points from the article include: - The importance of rethinking circular economy policies in Africa. - The role of CE in addressing trade imbalances and promoting regional integration. - The need for strong policy and regulatory frameworks to support CE practices. - The potential for CE to drive economic development, job creation, and environmental sustainability in Africa. At MIC, we are proud to contribute to this vision through our innovative projects in Ghana, a key member country. Our initiatives include: - Construction Materials: Creating sustainable partitioning wall systems from cocoa residuals. - Educational Infrastructure: Developing eco-friendly school desks from cocoa residuals. - Material innovation center. 🔜 Upcoming Mission to Ghana: Building on our feasibility study, we are planning a new mission to Ghana to expand our projects and deepen our collaboration with local communities, further integrating CE principles. As the JUST2CE project is drawing near its end. We wanted to make sure that some of the rather scientific publications are being made more accessible by practising science communication. Science communication is the practice of informing, raising awareness of science-related topics, and also getting involved with audiences that include, at least in part, people from outside the science community. JUST2CE has published an extensive e-book and the African Circular Economy Network (ACEN) has contributed towards two chapters. Today we share with you the first chapter which we have ‘translated’ into an article to make the information more accessible and also in line with justice as a required cornerstone of a just circular economy. The first article is on circular economy policies in Africa. Enjoy! 🌍 Exciting progress in China’s renewable energy sector! In May, renewables accounted for a record 44% of China's energy mix, reducing coal's share to a historic low of 53%. This surge in clean energy, driven by significant increases in solar, wind, and hydropower, suggests that China’s emissions may have peaked in 2023. Key insights from the recent analysis from the Asia Society Policy Institute highlight: - A 78 TWh increase in renewable power, outpacing a 49 TWh rise in electricity demand. - Solar energy grew by an unprecedented 41 TWh, or 78%, while hydropower recovered from a severe drought to rise by 34 TWh, or 39%. - Despite media speculations, the actual data debunked concerns about grid congestion affecting renewable performance. These developments underscore the potential for renewables to lead the way in reducing global carbon emissions and achieving climate goals. With continued rapid deployment, China is on track to further decrease its carbon footprint, setting a powerful example for the world. 🌏 Let’s continue to champion renewable energy solutions and support the transition to a sustainable future.🌱 #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #Innovation #CleanEnergy Sann Carrière Eric Logtens
