Transformations play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and minimising resource consumption. Our design for the transformation of the Shenzhen Women and Children’s Centre achieved a carbon saving comparable to nearly 12,000 flights from Amsterdam to Shenzhen! On 7 October in Madrid, Jacob van Rijs will speak at the XXV arquia/becas 2024 Award Ceremony, organised by Fundación Arquia, to highlight the importance of rethinking building conservation, with the Shenzhen Women and Children’s Centre as a key example. The event will also include the awarding of 51 scholarships to students and recent graduates to carry out professional internships in architectural practices and cultural institutions. Jacob served as chair of this year’s jury for the scholarship awards. More details can be found here! https://lnkd.in/eim-q3mm
Over ons
MVRDV was set up in 1993 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A research based and highly collaborative design method engages experts from all fields, clients and stakeholders in the creative process. The results are exemplary and outspoken buildings, urban plans, studies and objects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. Early projects by the office, such as the headquarters for the Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO and WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam lead to international acclaim. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way in which the changing conditions are visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram. The office continues to pursue its fascination for and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space using the complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes. The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. Seventy architects, designers and other staff develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process which involves rigorous technical and creative investigation. MVRDV works with BIM and has official in-house BREEAM and LEED assessors. Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

Make yellow win at Archello!💛 Our project Haus 1, the renovation of a dated office building into an eye-catching entrance building at the Atelier Gardens in Berlin, has been nominated for the Archello Awards for office building of the year, low and mid-rise! Originally plain white but now bright yellow, the transformed building is completed with a new living roof, with a sustainable timber rooftop pavilion and terrace, accessible via a grand external staircase. HAUS 1 hosts adaptive work and meeting spaces across four floors. The building’s new sunshine yellow draws attention to the campus from both near and far. From the central plaza of Atelier Gardens, a zig-zagging stair-scape, dotted with seating and viewing platforms offers views on the Berlin skyline. With its focus on reusing as much of the structure as possible, and giving preference to durable, recyclable materials with a low environmental footprint whenever new materials were required, HAUS 1 shows how building can be transformed to do more with less!♻️🛠️ You can vote for Haus 1 here: https://lnkd.in/dRWyi3YX Read more on the project on our website: https://lnkd.in/envbySqF Atelier Gardens | Fabrix | Hirschmüller Schindele Architects | Harris Bugg Studio 📷Lukas Drobny | Schnepp Renou

We're bringing a piece of Shenzhen to Frankfurt! Our Fabrications team made a model of the Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre for the International High-Rise Awards Exhibition in Frankfurt.🏆🏙️ Completed in 2023, the Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre has transformed an old mixed-use tower into a vibrant and colourful skyscraper hosting a hotel and a wide range of facilities for the welfare of women and children. With its colourful façade, the building is a refreshing presence in Shenzhen’s Futian district. More importantly, at 100 metres tall, the building sets an important precedent for repurposing buildings in a city that is soon to see more reuse projects coming its way! The Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre has, alongside Valley, been nominated for the International High-Rise Awards organised by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), Stadt Frankfurt am Main, and DekaBank Deutsche Girozentrale! There is an exhibition dedicated to this award, where this model and a Valley model will be displayed, from November 13 till January 12 at the Museum Für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt. “From the beginning, we’ve always been trying to see densification as a problem that we have to solve in a good way, to develop the 'three-dimensional city': not just one programme extruded up, but elevating more of the city fabric, normally expected at the ground level, upwards.” In the CTBUH’s latest issue on Vertical Urbanism, Will Hunter and Francisco Javier Quintana de Uña interview our very own M, VR, and DV on our reputation for challenging architectural expectations in tall buildings and how we continue to generate new social and sustainable models for liveable urban density. Topics discussed touch on a wide array of our projects, such as Future Towers in India, The Hills in Ecuador, Valley and Westerpark West in Amsterdam, and our co-living design study. The April 2024 issue of The Architectural Review explored the Mediterranean architecture’s rich cultural exchange and historical continuity. Is there such a thing as a "Mediterranean way" of designing? And how do we learn from and incorporate Mediterranean influences in our design? Join our associate director Aser Giménez Ortega on October 25 at the MAS Week in Taranto, Italy in conversation with Professor Enzo Calabrese to consider these questions from a number of different perspectives. Examining a range of MVRDV projects, Aser will explain how the values of Mediterranean cities and people can influence buildings.
