✍ Fostering a more effective and humane approach to rehabilitation and reintegration in Ukraine As part of our focus on #resocialisation and the development of a #recovery plan for #detention facilities in #Ukraine, the NHC organised a 4-day workshop in Ukraine in the middle of August. The workshop centred on strengthening understanding & capacity in: 🔹 Public-Private Partnerships, presented by Martin Speelman and Frank Schaap from Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid, on the example of Dutch Zaanstad prison. 🔹 Broader engagement of NGOs in resocialization work from Serbian experience by Darjan (Vuk) Vulevic. 🔹 Close cooperation of prison and probation from Dutch example by Jochum Wildeman and Femke van der Meulen. 🔹 Skills to avoid burnout by local expert Yurii Lutsenko. 🤝 We are grateful to all presenters and participants; representatives of Ukrainian “Center of Probation”, penitentiary facilities, the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine, and of Department for the Execution of Criminal Punishments, for their thought-provoking and engaging contributions. 🔎 Find out more about the #workshop, next steps, and our work on “Advancing Justice and Accountability in Ukraine: Strengthening and Supporting the Prison System in Ukraine”, together with IDLO - International Development Law Organization T.M.C. Proud to have kicked off the third and final regional conference on Media Freedom in Mavrovo, North Macedonia , entitled "Stronger Together: Journalists and Judiciary Safeguarding Media Freedom”. Over the next few days, more than 70 journalists and members of the judiciary from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and North Macedonia will engage in meaningful dialogue on topics of disinformation, legal attacks and impunity, among others. As NHC's Acting Executive Director Joeri Buhrer Tavanier notes: "The title of this conference is Stronger together, and that's exactly what the next days will be about. Over the last 4 years both the judiciary and media have worked very hard on safeguarding media freedom. This project aims to bring both groups together, and we have come a long way over the course of this project." We look forward to fostering important and much needed dialogue between the judiciary and journalists in the region, and continuing to work together to strengthen the capacity of the judicial sector to respond adequately to the threats journalists’ face, whilst at the same time improving the conditions under which the media operates.
