Labyrinthia, the completely new collection presentation at the Drents Museum, offers a magical journey through the iconic stories of Drenthe. NorthernLight was responsible for the spatial, visual and experience design of fifteen enchanting rooms, the welcome area, as well as the magical hallways. The design of Labyrinthia offers a unique experience in every room. Central themes such as “What makes us human?”, “How far would you go for your ideals?”, and “What would you do if you were threatened?” connect the present with the past, always keeping the visitor at the heart of the experience. Each room’s atmosphere is carefully designed, intertwining historical contexts with modern elements. For the first time in Germany, two adventure journeys through the body and time lead into a fascinating world of science and cultural history on the subject of food and drink in the new traveling exhibition ‘Essen und Trinken’ at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim, Germany. NorthernLight designed the exhibition where visitors experience an adventurous journey through the inside of the human body. With a variety of theme islands and hands-on areas the exhibition spectacularly illustrates the path of food and how it strengthens us as a source of energy. Interactive stations, archaeological finds, anatomical models and cultural-historical testimonies will offer exciting insights into the history of nutrition and the paths of food in our body. ‘Essen und Trinken’ can be visited until July 27, 2025. Step into the world of forgotten peoples in history with the major archaeological exhibition ‘Dacia – Empire of gold and silver’ at the Drents Museum, where remarkable treasures unveil the story of an ancient empire. Designed by NorthernLight, this exhibition illuminates the rich cultural history of the Dacians, a civilization that thrived before the Roman conquest. The mystical and almost otherworldly qualities of Dacian art are translated into a contemporary, theatrical, stage-like exhibition design. In this way, the exhibition explores the Dacians’ unique position and brings the story of this ‘forgotten people’ to life in the present day. ‘Dacia – Empire of gold and silver’ can be visited at the Drents Museum until 26 January 2025. At NorthernLight, our aim in designing contemporary exhibitions about historical topics is to connect the topic to the NOW. Traditional historical exhibitions quite often try to mimic the THEN for the visitors. That is why we recently introduced our vision for the ’The transhistorical space’. This correlates with recent developments in historical studies to link historical events with current and timeless developments, rather than binding them to their epoch only. That leads to a shift from an “As if you were there” to a “there is here” approach for our exhibition design. Several of our recent (and upcoming) projects embody this philosophy. Dive into the fascinating world of artificial intelligence at experimenta – Das Science Center’s new pavilion, now open to the public right in the center of Heilbronn. NorthernLight designed the concept and exhibition, 'AI: Insights and Visions,' with the goal of introducing this groundbreaking topic to the public and illustrating how artificial intelligence is reshaping our world. It has been developed in close partnership with the team of experimenta – Das Science Center (Germany’s largest science center), Bruns, and YIPP. Housed in a new timber-frame reusable pavilion in a beautiful public space, our spatial design aims to create a warm and friendly atmosphere, departing from the cold imagery often associated with AI. Inspired by the name of the city Heilbronn, the central concept of the design is 'The source of AI is human,' emphasizing AI's role as a human helper. The exhibition offers an introduction to AI's past, its meteoric rise, and future initiatives in the city. Admission to the space is kept free, allowing a broad public to visit and familiarize themselves with the concepts of AI. Also thanks to Shosho for the introduction film and SonicPicnic for the soundscape. Photos by Experimenta gGmbH. Mission Masterpiece shortlisted for the Museums + Heritage Awards! 🎉 We are thrilled that Mission Masterpiece, the first family exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, has been shortlisted for the Museums + Heritage Awards 2024. In the category International Exhibition of the Year, Mission Masterpiece has been selected along with 4 other projects by the jury. Mission Masterpiece is the museum’s first family exhibition, where children can become science investigators and investigate real works of art. Together with the Rijksmuseum team, NorthernLight developed the concept for the exhibition. The final design was done by NorthernLight in close cooperation with Irma Boom office. The entire Philips Wing was transformed into a huge research lab, where the whole family could use microscopes and x-ray machines as they searched for genuine masterpieces. The Museums + Heritage Awards celebrate the very best in the world of museums, galleries, and cultural and heritage visitor attractions. Hundreds of submissions were read, discussed and scrutinised and finally whittled down to the most innovative and inspiring projects. We are looking forward to the award evening on May 15, in London.
