Notes from our meetup this morning on Hiring AI-Powered Developers: Today diving into the nuances of hiring AI-enabled developers. Here are some of the most valuable bits from the conversation Who to Hire: Attitude Over Experience, with a Balance 🔹 Mindset Matters: There’s a growing consensus that attitude, curiosity, and motivation often outweigh pure experience. Candidates who are resourceful with AI tools, like ChatGPT or Copilot, bring fresh perspectives and agility to teams. Candidates that are using the less "mainstream" tools show good resourcefulness and curiosity. 🔹 Balance of Seniority: For high-stakes projects, mid to senior developers with “battle scars” are essential. For more experimental or rapid-prototyping roles, junior developers with a strong learning attitude can be a valuable asset, especially when paired with AI. Battle scars bring scepticism and context to complexity. This is invaluable, and not something AI is good at. 🔹 AI-Driven Innovators: Look for candidates who actively explore beyond the basics. Asking about side projects, AI tools they’ve explored, or new skills they’re self-teaching can reveal those who are more AI-forward. Candidates who continually experiment and stay up-to-date with tech trends are often the ones driving innovation. How to Hire: Assessing AI Readiness and Skills 🔹 Process Over Output: Simulation days, interactive code reviews, and walkthrough videos can reveal a candidate’s thinking process—essential for gauging how well they navigate AI tools alongside traditional coding. It's super important to focus on the process over the output to know if you're hiring someone who will be AI-enabled, not AI dependent. 🔹 Soft Skills Assessment: Soft skills and growth potential are increasingly important. We discussed using situational questions to explore past problem-solving experiences, curiosity, and adaptability. This approach, along with traditional references, can offer insights that technical testing won't. As "the right answer" becomes easier to ascertain, we need to get better and better at understanding if candidates will make the right decision, rather than reach the right answer. The past is the best indicator we have of that. 🔹 Balanced AI Use: Some companies have shifted to using platforms that track AI usage during assessments. This helps ensure candidates aren’t overly reliant on AI without the foundational skills needed for effective problem-solving. That said, it's NB to evolve our thinking to make sure people are using the tools that make them productive, without becoming mindless. Grateful to everyone who shared their experiences and strategies—always more to learn from each other! If you have any additional tips or are navigating similar challenges, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. 🚀
