Should you send money across borders with Paypal or your bank? It’s handy, because you probably already have an account but… Paypal and banks ask for fees to exchange your money and to send your money across borders. Sometimes the receiving bank also charges money on top of the amount you already paid! To make it worse, they usually don’t have a competetive exchange rate. At the moment there are many other options to send your money that are better than Paypal or banks. How much does it cost to send $200? This graph compares cash to digital transfers. It’s interesting to see that the cost for cash transfers is so much higher than for digital remittances. But we were also surprised to see that the cost for digital transfers has increased from 2016 to 2023. PesaPesa hopes to help bring down the cost and make remittances easy, fast and cheap. You shouldn’t have to pay up to 10% in cost just to send money to your loved ones. These numbers are taken out of a study called “Promoting financial inclusion through digitalization of remittances” by the IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) and was published in June 2024. A mexican research paper found that in the last two decades migrants from Latin America living in the US have decreased poverty in their countries of origin. 10% increase in remittances was correlated to a reduction of 6,7% on people living on less than 1,90$ a day. It also decreased the poverty gap by 10% Remittances go directly to the needy and are spent in their direct surroundings. The people can decide themselves which invest is most needed at that time and can have a longterm effect on their lives. Through remittances the overhead cost of aid organisations is saved as well.
