🐔 Exciting News for Insect-Based Broiler Feed! Last week, our colleague Laura de Jong proudly represented Protix at the 75th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Animal Production in Italy. Highlight of the event was Arya Rezaei Far from Wageningen Livestock Research, sharing the latest findings on the benefits of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) in maintaining growth performance in slow-growing broilers. 🐣👏 These results, part of a Public Private Partnership project with Venik, ForFarmers, Esbro and us, were reinforced by several studies demonstrating the positive impact of BSFL on livestock performance. With a growing body of data, we’re confident insect-based feed is a turnkey solution for chicken feed. It’s the cat’s whiskers! If even picky felines like a new food, you know you’re onto something good. 🐱🏍   In a study from Wageningen University & Research and Petgood eight adult cats received a feed including 37.5% ProteinX insect meal, alongside a control food based on poultry by-product meal (PBP).   All cats well accepted the diet and maintained their consumption throughout the 28-day trail period. None of the cats - and let’s face it they have a reputation for being fickle – turned their noses up at the food. No significant changes in blood parameters were recorded and the cats maintained their body weight and overall health.   Treat cats to a tasty food that’s healthy too. 🦐 We had an amazing time last week at the Global Shrimp Forum in the Netherlands! Excitement filled the room during Wednesday’s session titled 'The Future of Insect Proteins in Shrimp Feed Formulations.' Our CCO, Piotr Postepski, delivered a fantastic presentation on Protix's growth story and vision, and joined a lively panel discussion with experts on how to further adopt insect proteins in aquaculture feed. The engaged audience asked plenty of insightful questions, making it a truly dynamic session! 🐛 Insects stole the spotlight! They were a hot topic across multiple sessions, recognised as a crucial alternative protein for the future. Our value chain collaboration with Albert Heijn, Klaas Puul B.V., Cofimar S.A., Skretting, and Veramaris was frequently mentioned as a best practice. On top of that, it was a pleasure reconnecting with so many great people in the industry, sparking lively conversations about transparency, sustainability, and feed innovation as a solution for sustainable aquaculture. Happy to share that our expert Lotte Joosten will be presenting at the interdisciplinary symposium ‘Insects as Sustainable Feed’. This symposium focuses on exploring the role of insects as sustainable feed. Rearing insects on residual streams from the food industry can play an important role in making feed production more sustainable in the poultry sector. The Insect Feed symposium addresses the environmental, health, ethical, consumer and economic perspectives. Lotte will shine a spotlight on our operations to keep our black soldier fly (BSF) populations healthy. As the industrialization of BSF expands and accelerates, its upscaling presents new challenges in maintaining the health of reared BSF populations. Lotte will discuss several measures implemented at our industrial scale production facility to safeguard against insect diseases and ensure optimal health. Santé! INSECTFEED is a consortium, where key members of the value chain—including universities, research institutes, food safety scientists, livestock specialists, animal welfare organizations and farmers—collaborate to answer pressing questions around the health and welfare of insects and the poultry that consume them. What a moment at AQUA 2024! Last week in Copenhagen, at Aqua 2024 -a must-attend event blending a scientific conference, trade show, and industrial forums- Turid Mørkøre from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences wowed the audience with an outstanding presentation on a feeding trial with Atlantic salmon in the seawater phase. The research, conducted in collaboration with Aller Aqua and Austevoll Melaks AS, put a diet containing our ProteinX (black soldier fly larvae protein meal) to the test against a control diet, and the results were fantastic! Not only did the salmon fed with ProteinX show incredible yield improvements, but they also came out on top in taste tests. These findings are sparking exciting ideas for future feed formulations.
