I love this case from our partners at Protobrand and their fantastic client Xavier Vaissiere at Colgate-Palmolive. I love it for three reasons: 1. It's a perfect illustration of how the say/do gap requires us to go deeper in search of our insights in order to inform sharper strategies. Most people say they want a whiter smile, and many even say they're willing to supplement their oral care regimen to get one. But only 10% of the population does. Why? (Watch the video to find out! Hint: it's one of the seven deadly sins 😱) 2. It showcases the importance of choicefullness - having the courage to say "yes" to some things and "no" to others - when shaping your strategy. Colgate intentionally said "no" to 40% of the population as potential targets because they had the insight to know where the real opportunity was. 3. Results. Knowing what emotions and associations were actually shaping consumer decision-making in the space allowed Colgate to focus the right messages and offers to the right people, and it paid off.
