Hey all – I recently joined the group and thought I'd share my experiences as a 20+ year GenX remote worker. I started working remotely in 2002 when a corporate layoff put me back in the job market. I found more freelancing projects than job offers, so I started a web development business. To keep my costs down, I put an office in my basement. It was comfy, but some days I just wanted to see daylight. I created a server-based workflow so I could grab a laptop, head to a local coffee shop, and pick up where I left off. I loved not having a commute, spending more time with my wife and two kids, and flexing my work day. In 2010, we took advantage of being remote-working homeschoolers and left on what we thought would be a one-year full-time family RV trip. One year stretched into eight as we realized how RV life enabled us to sample experiences like houseboating, workcamping, homesteading, animal care, vanlife, and community life. With our two kids grown up and moved out, my wife and I wanted to add small-town living to our growing collection of lifestyles. We landed in rural Missouri and found jobs running the local newspaper. Then came COVID. And the newspaper sold to a new owner we didn't want to work for.   I found a new remote corporate job. No longer as involved in the local community, we started asking, "What's next?"   Friends told us about the Tulsa Remote program (https://lnkd.in/gsVqXAix). Between the $10K Tulsa Remote stipend and Tulsa's modest cost of living, we saw a chance to add downtown city apartment living to our lifestyle collection.   We put renters in our Missouri house, loaded up a U-Haul, and moved in February 2023.   We're loving life on Tulsa time.    MsBoyink used local resources to refresh her nursing license and found a job she could walk to.   Through TR events and local events, we are more socially engaged and connected than ever before. We enjoy the theater, symphony, ballet, art walks, and a plethora of restaurants - all within 15 minutes of home.   And the music!   The Bob Dylan Center, the Woody Guthrie Center, and the Church Studio keep musical history alive. Dozens of venues like Cains Ballroom, the Mercury Lounge, and BOK Center give musicians of all types places to play.   I've recently started channeling my love of music and history by becoming a volunteer docent at the Church Studio. And as a photographer, Tulsa has all kinds of things to point a camera at.   Are we forever Tulsans? Not sure. We just decided to sell our Missouri house and be "all-in" on Tulsa. For now, anyway. It's hard to imagine finding what we have here somewhere else.   But there's always that chance we'll start - again - wondering what's next. Maybe it’ll be time to collect that "international traveler" experience?   No matter where the road goes, we'll be grateful for our time in Tulsa and how remote work enabled us to be here. #RWWPartner

The year: 2017 I quit my desk job and started a boutique social media agency, so I could work while caring for my three kids. I knew that working from home and having a flexible schedule was the *only* way I could have any work/life balance, and yet I was exhausted working around the clock! After 3 years of agency life, I took on a new client named mmhmm. What a weird name right? But even from a distance, I could tell this company was different. They called themselves a high trust company. Everyone was fully remote - there wasn't even an office building! Employees didn't have set work hours. They were just expected to get their job done to the best of their ability. And they paid their employees a monthly remote work stipend to cover their home office expenses. Whaaaaat. After running the socials at mmhmm for 6 months, I knew I wanted to work there full time. They offered the remote work and flexibility that I needed, while also providing the stability of a monthly paycheck and benefits. So yes, I convinced them to hire me as a full time employee, I let all my other social media clients go, and I've been happily working for mmhmm ever since. LONG STORY SHORT - I'm thrilled to be a part of this community, representing a company who truly embodies the RWW spirit. We have team members on 6 continents and empower remote working through our immersive video app. We're partnering with RWW for the next year, so you'll get to know me and the mmhmm product well!
