On July 9, 1860, a violent mob swept through the Christian quarters of Damascus. For eight days, violence raged, leaving five thousand Christians dead, thousands of shops looted, and churches, houses, and monasteries razed. The sudden and ferocious outbreak shocked the world, leaving Syrian Christians vulnerable and fearing renewed violence. Drawing on his recent book, 'The Damascus Events', Prof. dr. Eugene Rogan will discuss in our next SHN-lecture the 1860 Christian massacre and the European response on behalf of the Syrian and Lebanese Christians. He will draw a comparison with the modern doctrine of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) to ask if intervention is ever entirely disinterested. Are you interested to know more? Come to his lecture ‘The European Response To The 1860 Massacres in Lebanon and Damascus: A 19th Century Precursor To The Responsibility To Protect’! 📆 : 11th of December 2024. ⌚ : 16:00-17:30 📍 : Belle van Zuylenroom, Academiegebouw Utrecht. There will be free drinks afterwards! 🍻 You can sign up via the link: https://lnkd.in/e-uexi8Y

Discover the compelling analysis of the dynamic relationship between Adolf Hitler's drive for national security and Joseph Goebbels' quest to instill unwavering faith in the German people during World War II. In the newest SHN-blog, Thomas Weber delves into how these two powerful figures intertwined their goals to mobilize the nation, with Goebbels’ propaganda serving as a vital tool in Hitler’s pursuit of a secure, Nazi-dominated Germany. This insightful piece sheds light on the chilling mechanics behind one of history's most devastating regimes. Read it on our website: https://lnkd.in/eBeGV6ce

"The spectacle at this moment is particularly grand and sublime. A black thunderstorm is rising, probably an effect of the long cannonade; its vivid lightning discovers the hostile fleets retiring with the land breeze." These words wrote William Shaler after witnessing the Bombardment of Algiers on the 27th of August 1816. A combined British-Dutch fleet under the command of the Viscount of Exmouth had bombarded the city of Algiers that night. 50.000 projectiles had been fired. The bombardment resulted in the death of 300 to 2000 Algerians. The Anglo-Dutch fleet didn't act in the interest of their crowns; they acted for the sake of "universal" interests and "humanity". With the bombardment of Algiers the security of the sea gained afoot. Do you want to know more about the securitization of piracy in the nineteenth century? Please join our Book Launch of "Menacing Tides: Security, Piracy and Empire in the Nineteenth-Century Mediterranean" on 19 September! For more information on the lecture: https://lnkd.in/eG42wePb
