Im/material takeaways at MaterialDistrict Sustainable design is crucial at every level of the built environment – whether our clients explicitly request it or not. MaterialDistrict in Utrecht presents an excellent opportunity to explore new products, discover innovative applications, and catch up with partners and suppliers. Spatial designer Valentina Lovric and strategist Rogier Coopmans visited the fair and identified four im/material takeaways: ➤ Mycelium is everywhere – When searching for bio-based acoustic materials, mycelium panels stand out both aesthetically and in terms of sustainability. We're eager to find the perfect use case within our work. ➤ From your plate to plate material – It’s exciting to see food production waste streams, such as oyster shells, transformed into mouth-watering interior finishes. ➤ Keep a close look – The castor oil panels caught our eye, but a deep dive into composition and sourcing is still required. ➤ Corn just pops – As a bio-based product derived from agricultural waste, we saw corn-based materials that offer rich textures and colours which can bring a natural flavour to interiors. Back at the studio, we will research these materials and hope to incorporate them into our material library. The library system helps establish a hierarchy within our ever-growing sample collection, channelling our material expertise to better advise clients on sustainable options. Ultimately, as we approach design from a brand experience and storytelling perspective, we always seek materials with processing possibilities that allow us to integrate communication and graphics into the built environment. #materialdistrict #sustainabledesign #materiallibrary #circulardesign

Navigating hospitals can be overwhelming - especially in moments of stress and urgency Effective wayfinding goes beyond signage. It’s about designing intuitive experiences that guide patients, visitors, and staff seamlessly through complex environments, reducing confusion and frustration. Our approach to hospital wayfinding integrates: ⬩Clear guidance from the start: patients receive instructions in their appointment letters and check-in kiosks provide tickets with route and wait time details ⬩Inclusive navigation: pictograms and simplified clinic names, increase accessibility for non-Dutch speakers and those with low literacy ⬩Wayfinding through storytelling: hand-drawn floor numbers and lightbox graphics make navigation easier and create memorable visual cues, and add a sense of lightness In our work for Zaans Medisch Centrum, the wayfinding and storytelling operate in tandem. By carefully considering the hospital’s layout, movement patterns, user needs and regional heritage, we have created systems that reduce anxiety, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall hospital experience. 🔍 Discover how a thoughtful, fresh new look can redefine a familiar shopping destination and create lasting connections. We reflect on the total overhaul of wayfinding at Winkelcentrum Zuidplein, a major retail destination and important transportation hub in Rotterdam. A new approach and clear design refine the physical touchpoints at the mall to create an experience that meets the needs of both shoppers and commuters. Key highlights: ➡️ Improved visibility: clear signage and overview maps that improve navigation, serving a dual-purpose retail and transportation hub ➡️ Cohesive aesthetic: a unified design language aligned with the modernised storefronts, improved lighting, and streamlined parking access, designed by TconcepT ➡️ Smart wayfinding: a system that combines interactive maps and static displays to guide everyday shoppers, commuters, and incidental visitors. 🎸 Are You Gonna Go My Way? 🎶 Lead designer Eline W. shares five key principles behind the new wayfinding system for TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht – a venue as eclectic as its performances. ▶︎▶︎ https://bit.ly/3CEkGtJ With multiple entrances, seven distinct stages, and a blend of architectural styles, navigation was a challenge. Our ultimate goal? Making wayfinding intuitive, engaging, and seamlessly integrated into the venue’s identity and visitor experience. 🕺💃 Our solution is based on the following principles... ▶︎ Bold visibility – Enhancing entrances with clear statements ▶︎ Modular and scalable – Signage that can adapt to every space ▶︎ Playful and intuitive – Prioritising symbols over text for a welcoming feel ▶︎ Digital integration – Real-time guidance for large crowds ▶︎ Future-proofing – A smart system that evolves with the venue Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/3CEkGtJ Phase one of the wayfinding and signage will be rolling out in the next few months! Meanwhile, this Saturday 8 February TivoliVredenburg will celebrate the opening of their new entrance at Vredenburgplein and the beautifully renovated Grote Zaal foyers.
