An inspiring group of female leaders (and some ‘mavericks’) joined the Board of Believers breakfast to discuss the climate crisis and the role of women. Simavi director Dieneke van der Wijk had the opportunity to speak about the importance of female leadership and local solutions in the conversation about climate action that is needed now in countries in Africa and Asia. The biggest takeaway? It is the responsibility of each and everyone to start influencing, campaigning and taking action in the global climate crisis. Nederland niet van de kaart! Samen met tientallen andere Nederlandse organisaties voeren wij actie om de geplande bezuinigingen op ontwikkelingssamenwerking terug te draaien. Deze bezuinigingen treffen wereldwijd miljoenen mensen en vele organisaties die in samenwerking met Nederland werken aan oplossingen voor de grote mondiale uitdagingen van deze tijd: internationale veiligheid, klimaatverandering en een meer rechtvaardige wereld voor iedereen. Om het belang van Nederlandse samenwerking uit te leggen, sturen wij elk lid van de tweede kamer een kaartje met een duidelijke boodschap: Draai de bezuinigingen terug en zorg ervoor dat Nederland niet van de kaart verdwijnt! Een van deze partners is Sareen Malik van ANEW, de koepel van Afrikaanse waterorganisaties, met wie Simavi nauw samenwerkt. RTL Nieuws besteedt vandaag aandacht aan de zorgen die er zijn bij ontwikkelingsorganisaties, waaronder Simavi, over de enorme bezuinigingen op ontwikkelingssamenwerking. Simavi-directeur Dieneke van der Wijk zegt hier onder meer over: 'Dat wij ons als organisatie focussen op water, en dat in de plannen staat dat watermanagement een focus krijgt, betekent niet dat we ons geen zorgen maken.' ✉️𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹! ✉️ Vandaag ontving elk Tweede Kamerlid een persoonlijke ansichtkaart. ✉️Het kabinet-Schoof wil fors bezuinigen op ontwikkelingssamenwerking. Vanaf 2027 lopen deze bezuinigingen op tot maar liefst 2,4 miljard per jaar. Dit betekent dat er heel weinig overblijft van het beperkte budget voor internationale samenwerking. De voorgestelde bezuinigingen dreigen het cruciale werk van mensen wereldwijd en de positie van Nederland met één onbezonnen pennenstreek weg te gooien. Nederland dreigt van de kaart te verdwijnen! ✉️De afzenders van de ansichtkaarten komen van over de hele wereld. Zij vertellen hoe ze, in samenwerking met Nederland, werken aan oplossingen voor de grote uitdagingen van deze tijd: internationale veiligheid, klimaatverandering en een meer rechtvaardige wereld voor iedereen. The effects of climate change are largely felt through water. Flooding, multi-year droughts, and saltwater intrusion seriously threaten the availability of safe water. Women and girls are hit particularly hard as they are responsible for securing water and food. At the same time women continue to have less access to resources and decision making than men. For Simavi managing Director Dieneke van der Wijk there is no doubt: empowering women and girls to take ownership of the process of adapting to the impacts of climate change is crucial. 💪💧Celebrating the first year of the Water Justice Fund! Last year Simavi and Women Win launched the Water Justice Fund with the aim to achieve true locally-led adaptation. One year later, the fund has helped 33 women groups in Bangladesh, Nepal and Kenya to realize their own solutions to the water crisis.  This first year has exposed challenges and opportunities. We had to re-think what we think we know about climate adaptation and shifting the power. But it also has shown how women and girls can drive change. In Changunarayan in Nepal, many families are not aware that the water they consume could be contaminated with E. coli, and that it could make them sick. Local water supplies are often interrupted and inadequate, increasing the risk of contamination. That is why the Sarwacha programme aims to strengthen water systems and to ensure equal access to safe water for every household in the municipality. Merina Maharjan and Bivor Maharjan, both programme officers at Simavi’s partner ENPHO believe that the only way to achieve this is by engaging communities, entrepreneurs and local governments simultaneously.
