This week we'll attend a meeting for the NEN norm Committee for disinfectants and antiseptic in Milan. We are proud to be a NEN member and share our insights to improve and develop new guidance documents. These insights often derive from our daily practice as a microbiological testing lab and the qualification tests we execute on disinfectants and antiseptics. As such, we contribute to optimizing standards.
Disinfection qualification is a recurring topic during GMP audits. For the safety of patients, any manufacturer in the Life Science and Health (LHS) industry is keen on having effective disinfection procedures. How does a disinfectant (or its residue) affect the results of environmental monitoring? Ethanol (or ethanol-based biocide) does not leave any residue; the biocide evaporates quickly. However, with ethanol being replaced by alternative biocides, the following question pops us: what is the effect of biocide residues on microbiological monitoring results? Are the contact plates used for environmental monitoring capable of effectively neutralizing any residues? Certainly one of the items to address in your Contamination Control Strategy!
