The EU Taxonomy was introduced in 2020 to help companies and investors identify environmentally sustainable economic activities, with the goal of making Europe the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. In their first EU Taxonomy Reporting Review, co-authors Hortense Bioy, CFA, Head of Sustainable Investing Research and Noemi Pucci, ESG Quantitative Associate Analyst, examined alignment to KPIs on revenue, opex, and capex on more than 1,300 non-financial companies, to understand the progress they're making on reporting their taxonomy alignment. Findings from the report include: 📊Reported capital investments reached USD 500 billion, but average taxonomy-alignment levels have not increased. 📐Average alignment levels reported this year are quasi-unchanged compared to last year’s alignment levels. 📒Non-financial companies reporting above-zero data have 28% of their capital investments (capex) aligned with the taxonomy, on average. 📈Alignment levels are expected to increase from next year, when alignment reporting on the four new environmental objectives of the taxonomy becomes mandatory. The UN’s Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) is set to convene in Colombia next week, with a focus on biodiversity. The agenda is focused on the state of implementation for the Global Biodiversity Framework, where countries are expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the framework. In anticipation of COP16, Morningstar Sustainalytics hosted a roundtable in London, featuring our experts on biodiversity and sustainable finance. Gayaneh Shahbazian discussed the notable progress in biodiversity since COP15 and the ongoing challenges businesses face in contributing towards nature-positive outcomes. Thomas Eveson shared how the sustainable bond market continues to evolve, with marine resources growing in prevalence with global events like COP14, COP15, and now COP16, putting precedence on nature preservation. Arthur Carabia explained that similar to climate, policy makers can take very concrete steps to support investors, including setting preservation and restoration targets, growing the pool of information, and help identify investment opportunities. And Lindsey Stewart, CFA commented on how the conversation around biodiversity and nature within ESG is approaching a potential breakout moment. But a lack of regulation and standards akin to those established for climate issues remains a key barrier. Read on below to see their key insights on biodiversity. #climate #biodiversity #marinepreservation #bluebonds #sustainablebonds #impactinvesting #sustainablefinance #climatealigned #COP16 #esg

It was a fantastic week in Toronto for members of the responsible investing community attending Principles for Responsible Investment in Person. As the host city and country, a notable highlight was Canada’s announcement of a national taxonomy that defines and categorizes investments that advance the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. And of course, the conference presented an opportunity for colleagues and friends to connect and engage on topics of sustainable finance. 📸Image Captions: 1.
