🌍🌳 Nature-based Solutions are key in halting biodiversity loss – and few are as critical as preserving and restoring our forests. That’s why Triodos Regenerative Money Centre has committed a USD 2.5 million loan to Treevive, a visionary player in the carbon market. Treevive’s vision is ambitious: by 2030, they aim to develop 30 forest restoration projects, preserve and restore 2 million hectares of tropical forest, capture 30 million tonnes of CO₂, create 7,500 jobs, and create 15 million carbon credits. Bianca Boelema, Senior Investment Manager at Triodos Regenerative Money Centre: “By investing in Treevive's innovative forest carbon projects, we are addressing critical issues such as biodiversity loss. Transformative impact comes from patient, risk-tolerant capital. Together with Treevive, we can demonstrate the power of Nature-based Solutions and set an example for future investments in environmental restoration and community resilience." 🎙️ How do the EU Taxonomy and the EU Green Bond Standard support the low-carbon transition? Rosl Veltmeijer-Smits discusses this topic with Esther Griffioen (Dutch State Treasury Agency) and Jie Chen, CFA (Triodos Investment Management) in our podcast series Inside Impact Investing . Griffioen explains that mapping its activities against the Taxonomy helps the Dutch State as an issuer of green bonds in identifying expenditures that are truly green. She also gives examples where the criteria of the Taxonomy don’t work in practice. Chen emphasises that Triodos Investment Management still applies its own criteria in addition, for instance by excluding gas and nuclear energy and by looking at environmental activities that are currently not covered by the Taxonomy like sustainable food and agriculture. 🎧 Listen to this insightful podcast on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/e5S6JN8w #ImpactInvesting #Podcast #EUTaxonomy #GreenBonds #GreenTransition #LowCarbonTransition

In this interview senior relationship manager Rianne Koster (Triodos Bank) and fund manager Willy Bulsink (Triodos IM) explain why circular and nature-inclusive construction projects are an increasingly important part of the Triodos Groenfonds portfolio. Willy Bulsink: “The construction industry still uses a lot of primary raw materials, but we cannot continue indefinitely to extract them. In addition, the use of concrete is energy-intensive, leads to significant CO2 emissions and is relatively time-consuming. Timber construction, on the other hand, stores CO2, takes less time and causes much less inconvenience in dust fall and noise. For these reasons, circular construction, and nature-inclusive construction is the future as far as we are concerned.” "Sustainable construction is scalable and can become big. Even if only part of Dutch building production were circular and nature-inclusive, it would already have a mega impact on CO2 emissions,” says Rianne Koster. Despite their recent downturn, the ‘Magnificent Seven’ – the world’s seven largest tech giants – continue to dominate the MSCI World index. "With a deliberate underweight in Big Tech – we only have a position in Nvidia - and a complete exclusion of fossil fuels and many financials, our strategy may diverge from the benchmark”, explains portfolio manager Arjan Palthe. "Our Global Equities Impact strategy reflects a strong commitment to long-term, positive impact rather than mirroring traditional market weightings. The beauty of large caps is that when they make a positive change with their activities, it has an immediate and huge impact. And with regard to financial returns: indices are at an all-time high.” Read the interview on our website. #ImpactInvesting #Equities #LargeCaps #EquityBenchmark #MarketingCommunication

📣 Interesting and recommendable read: report by the Netherlands Advisory Board on Impact Investing on the state of impact investing in the Dutch Institutional investment market. This report serves as a baseline for the NAB's 10% Target Program, an ambitious initiative encouraging Dutch pension funds, asset managers, insurance companies, and banks to allocate at least 10% of their AuM to impact investments by 2025, with a specific 4% allocation to emerging markets by 2030. "Our analysis shows that while some progress has been made, institutional investors are not yet allocating enough to achieve the SDGs," says Simona Benvenuti, Director 10% Target Program at NAB. The NAB is pleased to acknowledge that leading Dutch institutional investors such as a.s.r. and Achmea have already announced a target of 10% in June 2024 and in August 2024 respectively. These early commitments signal a growing awareness of the urgent need to scale impact investing. "We commend the leadership of a.s.r. and Achmea and urge other institutional investors to join them in this critical initiative," adds Simona Benvenuti. At Triodos Investment Management we see that pension managers are putting down capital. With the right investments, they can act as accelerators for much-needed innovation. Does the EU Taxonomy in its current shape live up to its promise and true potential? Is it indeed the key to climate neutrality, or rather a carte blanche to green washing? Nikkie Pelzer and Rosl Veltmeijer-Smits conclude that the Taxonomy is valuable but imperfect. “The irony is that the Taxonomy aims to eliminate greenwashing and to direct more capital towards sustainable projects that contribute to a greener, more resilient European economy. Yet it also provides a carte blanche for greenwashing by labelling certain activities sustainable that according to science are not sustainable at all. This makes it easier for harmful companies to get ‘approval’ for their activities.” As an impact investor, we support the intention of the EU Taxonomy and acknowledge its potential to be a trailblazer in sustainable finance and in greening Europe. We certainly take the Taxonomy into account when assessing investment opportunities, but given its current limitations, we do not steer on maximising the Taxonomy alignment of our portfolios.
