Playgrounds - Moving forward, creating together. Platform for the best & brightest visual artists. Imagine Everything!
Over ons
We are an innovator and connector between makers, industry, education and audience, providing a stable fundament to boost new and relevant developments in the moving image fields of animation, visual effects, digital arts, film and games. We are a platform that showcases and celebrates the creative image. We stimulate new developments, signal innovative movements, we inspire an international creative industry and connect you to the best and brightest artists and animators, extraordinary filmmakers, game-, sound- and graphic designers. Since 2006 we have organized several Playgrounds festivals and conferences. What was first a yearly event turned in 2017 into a bi-annual momentum where the international creative industry comes together. Where you get inspired by artist talks, workshops, films and masterclasses. Where you meet your biggest heroes and witness mesmerizing performances. During the year we offer several inspiring festivals and events, either online, on location or in a hybrid form. At Playgrounds Blend we provide a catwalk of cutting edge creativity and a focus on trailblazers and audio-visual innovators. At Playgrounds The Art Department we put in the spotlight the design process of films, animations and games. And we bring you even more…. We regularly broadcast inspiring talks, panels, demo’s and studio visits at Playgrounds TV: our very own tv channel. Also good to know you can rewatch loads of talks, demo’s and panels at our On demand platform. Talent development is the core of Playgrounds. This is key in all our activities and we have developed a tailor made talent program called Next. Partners in Next are Submarine Channel, The Panics, BROET, Natlab, Herrie Film & TV, BredaPhoto, Art Academy St. Joost and Kaboom film festival.

When your first talk of the festival kicks off with "Thank God there was no internet when I was young. If I would have had Instagram and YouTube back then, I would have surely quit being an artist" (Vincent Schwenk) you can be sure the current state of the industry is going to reflect in many of the presentations and conversations carried out all through the day. And indeed, whether it was about cutting edge technologies and how they can be tamed and put to good use, about training AI on own works in order to save time with the redundant processes, or how to handle and detach from the toxicity of social media, the first day of In Motion Rotterdam reinforced why this is the place to be in order to get a good grasp of upcoming trends and all things relevant for the animation, film and games industries. In no particular order, here are some of our Day 1 takeaways: - Art&Graft pointing out how things changed in their work process and how they are nowadays creating with multiple ratios and adaptable formats in mind, from the very beginning. - The It's Nice That Panel beautifully showcasing how different artists can have different perspectives. While Yonk acknowledged how they pick commercial projects that challenge them to learn something new, Vincent Schwenk shared how he develops through personal work that he later applies to client jobs. - HyperCulture.nl letting us know that "As soon as we stopped comparing ourselves to other studios, things started working out for us." - Margherita Premuroso prompting us "Be versatile! Especially if you're young, you should try a little bit of everything to keep curiosity alive". - Giant Ant reflecting on remote work "We have a complicated relationship with remote work especially for the people that are either at the start or at the end of their career: the knowledge transfer requires a certain level of trust that is difficult to get via Zoom and Slack." -David Wilson inviting the audience to "Say Hello to the people sitting next to you. They won't bite!" With just a simple phrase it reminded us that there's beauty in being human. In Motion Rotterdam‘s first day left us feeling confident that whatever the future has in store for us, artist and human creativity will will always find a way to push things forward and tap deeper into the emotional level than any machines and technological advancements are able to. 📸 by Kamil Pawlowski #InMotion

✨ 6 emerging XR professionals selected for the Next XR Program ✨ Our new XR Talent Program kicked off in June, and we’re so excited to introduce the 6 selected XR creators. They have been actively developing and experimenting over the summer. To see their progress and get regular updates, follow them on our Playgrounds Next Instagram page: https://lnkd.in/ecnXNdkd 🎬 🔥 Flora Lemmens (Flora Lemmens) Flora is working on an immersive VR experience titled “Journey of the Hollow.” This project immerses users in the role of an empty entity navigating a surreal, abstract landscape, gradually filling with experiences and memories that symbolize self-discovery and identity formation. 🔥Tim van Nielen (Tim van Nielen) Tim’s project is called ‘For my Crime of being small’. It will be a challenging virtual reality climbing game with a story themed around the feeling of lagging behind, being physically small and vulnerable, the human hostility towards the lesser known or unknown, the danger and strength of ambition. Most importantly, the acceptance of yourself and others. 🔥Hazal Erturkan (Hazal Ertürkan) Hazal’s project explores the intersection of human consciousness, microbial ecology, and sensory perception through XR. She aims to create a bridge between external experiences and our internal ecologies through a generative and interactive animation for the multisensory XR dining experience, Drinkable Memories. This project is a part of the larger project, Microbiome Restaurant, that she designed in collaboration with Marcel van Brakel founder and lead designer at Polymorf. 🔥Eva Kröse (Eva Kröse) During her Next XR trajectory, Eva will dive into the potential of VR and the possibilities of translating the feeling and symbolic meaning of existential fear through an immersive experience—a profound and unsettling sensation that is difficult to express yet deeply felt. Her project aims to bring participants closer to this emotion while also providing a soothing experience. 🔥Joris de Jong Joris’ project ‘What AI See’ explores the integration of the digital landscape into live circus performances by examining how sight bridges the physical and digital realms. While humans, robots, and AI perceive the world differently, this project seeks to explore how AI's perception methods can enhance human abilities. ‘What AI See’ investigates the manipulation of sight, what we see and how we perceive it. 🔥Mauritz Seerden (Mauritz Seerden) Maurtiz participated in the first few months of the trajectory but due to personal reasons he will not finish the program. But he was selected and part of this new group of crazy talented XR artists. A big shout out & virtual hug from the Playgrounds Team. This talent program is part of Playgrounds Next and supported by the Netherlands FilmFund, Province Noord-Brabant, Netflix.

🎉 GET READY FOR 4 MORE YEARS FULL OF PLAYGROUNDS PROJECTS 🎉 Incredibly grateful, proud and super happy! This week we received the news that we will be funded for the next 4 years by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, Provincie Noord-Brabant, Gemeente Eindhoven and Gemeente Breda. We are very thankful for their trust in us. We could not have accomplished this without the support of our audience, the artists that were part of our festivals, our amazing volunteers, our educational partners, Screen Talent NL, principal sponsor Procreate sponsors Wacom Creatives Europe and MSI. You all helped to build our community over the last 18 years. Our hearts are full of joy! Still, we could not help noticing that other cultural partners in our field, creators of wonderful initiatives, did not receive their funding. We really hope they find other ways to proceed with their program.
