Over ons
We are dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Our vision is a world where wetlands are treasured and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support, and the resources they provide. Based mostly in the developing world, we have 20 regional, national or project offices in all continents and a head office in the Netherlands. We work in over 100 countries and at several, very different scales to tackle the most pressing problems affecting wetlands. With the support of dozens of governmental, NGO and corporate donors and partners, we support over 100 projects. Our work ranges from research and community-based field projects to advocacy and engagement with governments, corporate and international policy fora and conventions. Wetlands International works through partnerships and is supported by contributions from an extensive specialist expert network and tens of thousands of volunteers.

Wetland conservation and restoration is an essential component of delivering the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Ahead of #COP16Colombia next week, we have a document that provides guidance to Parties to UN Biodiversity on how to incorporate #wetlands actions into their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans in relation to each target. 🌿 Restoring mangroves is just the beginning—the real challenge is ensuring their long-term sustainability 🌊 In Video 4 of our video series on Effective Mangrove Restoration, we explain why the inclusive ‘Ecological Mangrove Restoration’ approach, which involves active participation from local communities, is essential for long-term success. Planning for long-term monitoring ensures restored mangroves continue to thrive well beyond project timelines. As we approach #COP16Colombia, let’s prioritize sustainable solutions that involve local communities and ensure lasting protection. 🌱 Watch the video (available in multiple languages) here: https://lnkd.in/eJTc27rq #MangroveRestoration #LongTermProtection #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityResilience #BiodiversityGoals Global Mangrove Alliance Mangrove Action Project (MAP) Conservation International High-Level Climate Champions

Too often, conversations about #water are separate from ones about #biodiversity. But the inclusion of wetlands in the global biodiversity framework targets represents an understanding of how important they are for both nature and climate. At #COP16Colombia next week, we must see ambitious strides taken by countries to include wetlands in their national plans for biodiversity. 🚨 BREAKING – Europe’s water crisis demands urgent action! 💧 A new report from the European Environment Agency shows that water resources are still under severe pressure, with little progress since 2009. The time to act is NOW! Our Freshwater Policy Officer Irene Duque Femenía reacts: "Thank you EEA! We heard the message loud and clear: our water resilience is at risk. The path forward to meet EU targets and improve the health of European waters is equally clear: wetland restoration over maladaptation." Wetlands are disproportionately important for #biodiversity, supporting 40% of the world's flora and fauna while only covering 6% of the planet. Wetlands are disappearing at a rate more than three times faster than forests, and faster than any other ecosystem. At #COP16Colombia, #wetlands need to be at the heart of efforts to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework, at global and national level, through policies, funding, and partnerships. An estimated 40 percent of the world’s #biodiversity are found in #wetlands – from inland lakes, swamps and river floodplains to coastal mangroves, coral reefs, tidal mudflats and salt marshes. In fact, more than a million threatened species of plants and animals depend on wetlands for their survival. Next week, at #COP16Colombia, we are hoping to see strong targets for the protection and restoration of wetlands across the globe. Healthy wetlands can help countries achieve multiple targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. UN Biodiversity Convention on Wetlands https://lnkd.in/edguRRAp

BREAKING: Freshwater species populations have now crashed by 85% (yes, that's 85%) on average since 1970! When will the world wake up to the freshwater crisis? We must scale up investment NOW in protecting and restoring our rivers, lakes and wetlands. The shocking statistic is one of the many alarming findings in the new WWF & Zoological Society of London (ZSL) #LivingPlanetReport - which is out today and is another clarion call for action to reverse nature loss. Overall, global wildlife populations have declined by 73% over the last 50 years - that's in my lifetime! With freshwater losses by far the worst. Momentum has been building for action on freshwater biodiversity in recent years with 'inland waters' explicity incorporated into the Global Biodiversity Framework. But this report shows that we need to URGENTLY and DRASTICALLY scale up investment in healthy freshwater ecosystems. Central to this is the Freshwater Challenge - the largest freshwater restoration and protection initiative in history. 46 countries and the EU have already joined. But we need more countries to join and for existing members to start assessing and prioritizing their rivers and wetlands for restoration and protection. And it's not just governments - companies and communities also have a critical role to play. Together, we can safeguard our freshwater ecosystems - not only helping to reverse the loss of freshwater species but also benefiting countless other species on land and in the sea AND societies and economies across the globe. But we need to accelerate action NOW! https://lnkd.in/eCFQbwhy Stuart Orr Philip Leonard James Dalton Christine Colvin Mina Guli Henk Ovink Michele Thieme Paula Martinelli Francesca Antonelli Julien Anseau Tara Moberg Lis Mullin Bernhardt Vivek Shah Robin Abell Jesse Gallun Michael Baltzer Martin Harper Lindsay Renick Mayer Herman Wanningen Marc Goichot Kathy Hughes Dean Muruven Hannah Baleta Jeff Opperman David Tickner Enock Ole Kiminta Will Sarni Alexis Morgan Rylan Dobson Vincent Gaillard Alex Money Alex Mung Dianna Kopansky Pavan Sukhdev Patricia Martin Zeb Hogan
