Happy #WorldMigratoryBirdDay! "To ensure our wondrous migratory birds recover and thrive, we need immediate action for wetlands, beginning with their inclusion in national biodiversity plans." Wetlands International will be at #COP16Colombia raising the profile of wetlands, especially those along flyways of global importance. We safeguard and restore wetlands for people and nature.
Over ons
We are dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Our vision is a world where wetlands are treasured and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support, and the resources they provide. Based mostly in the developing world, we have 20 regional, national or project offices in all continents and a head office in the Netherlands. We work in over 100 countries and at several, very different scales to tackle the most pressing problems affecting wetlands. With the support of dozens of governmental, NGO and corporate donors and partners, we support over 100 projects. Our work ranges from research and community-based field projects to advocacy and engagement with governments, corporate and international policy fora and conventions. Wetlands International works through partnerships and is supported by contributions from an extensive specialist expert network and tens of thousands of volunteers.

⚠ #BREAKING: The last 50 years have seen the steepest decline in wildlife populations in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in #freshwater species. We have global agreements and solutions to set nature on the path to recovery by 2030, but so far there’s been little progress on delivery and a lack of urgency. WWF's Living Planet Report is a timely reminder to all parties at #COP16Colombia to #ActForOurPlanet now. #WeNeedWetlands

Healthy #wetlands are central to achieving multiple targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework (#GBF). Countries need to urgently prioritise the restoration of degraded wetlands and address the drivers of their loss at #COP16Colombia. UN Biodiversity Convention on Wetlands https://lnkd.in/e__b9Jei

⚠️ 2023 marked the driest year for global rivers in over three decades ⚠️ The year 2023 was marked by mostly drier-than-normal to normal river discharge conditions. The inflows into reservoirs showed a similar pattern to the global river discharge trends. "We need to scale up investment in protecting and restoring our freshwater ecosystems. Healthy rivers, lakes and wetlands are the best natural defence against worsening water-related climate impacts, including extreme floods, droughts and storms. They are also central to enhancing water and food security, and reversing nature loss." - Richard Lee https://lnkd.in/g4X4XHKN

⚠ #BREAKING: Wildlife populations have suffered a staggering 73% decline in the last 50 years with freshwater species seeing an astonishing 85% decline ⚠ WWF's Living Planet Report is a timely reminder that the time to #ActForOurPlanet is now. In a few days, countries will meet at #COP16Colombia to assess progress on national biodiversity plans. Wetlands are a biodiversity haven - supporting 40% of all flora and fauna, including several threatened species. Prioritising the conservation and restoration of #wetlands should be high on the agenda to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. Convention on Wetlands UN Biodiversity
🚨 #BREAKING: This is a code red for nature. Species population numbers have plummeted by 73% on average since 1970. This is getting worse over time, when it should be getting better. Vital ecosystems are on the brink of collapse. We’re dangerously close to tipping points, where the damage to our planet will cause irreversible impacts on all our lives. We must turn things around immediately. Urgent action is needed now – not tomorrow or next year. 🗣 Share this video to #ActForOurPlanet. https://lnkd.in/d-ESAMH #LPR2024 #LivingPlanetReport

Migratory birds, wetlands, and human beings are all part of a delicate and interconnected ecosystem. While wetland ecosystems provide crucial habitats, the biodiversity they support shapes the natural system and plays a vital role in maintaining the health of our planet’s ecosystems. We need to prioritise the restoration of #wetlands to deliver the #BiodiversityPlan. UN Biodiversity Convention on Wetlands BirdLife International https://lnkd.in/gMfQSuMa
