Hong Kong to Europe tonnages continue to build Air cargo tonnages from China to Europe have broadly recovered to their levels prior to China’s Golden Week holiday at the start of October, while tonnages from Hong Kong to Europe have risen further in the last six weeks to their highest level this year, indicative of a possible ramping up of e-commerce and wider demand from this key origin market in the final months of the year. According to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, Hong Kong to Europe tonnages in week 42 (14 to 20 October) were +25% higher than their already strong levels in the equivalent week last year. And Hong Kong to Europe tonnages in weeks 40-42 were +12% higher than their average weekly levels in September. China-USA tonnages remain depressed after Golden Week Worldwide and Asia Pacific air cargo tonnages have only partially recovered from the effects of China’s Golden Week holiday in early October, according to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, with traffic from China to the USA showing little sign of rebounding at all in the first week since the major Chinese holiday. Tonnages to the USA from China in week 41 (7 to 13 October) increased by just +1%, week on week (WoW), after dropping by -20% in week 40. In contrast, last year, China to USA tonnages recovered in week 41 to a level close to pre-Golden Week levels. Meanwhile, tonnages to the USA from Asia Pacific as a whole remained flat in week 41 this year after declining in week 40 by -10%, figures driven mainly by the China-USA market. Rates rise to 2024 high despite tonnage dip Global air cargo spot rates rose to new 2024 highs in the first few days of October despite a dip in worldwide tonnages linked to national holidays in China and disruptions to air traffic in the Middle East caused by the increased tensions in the region. According to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, average worldwide spot rates edged by a further +1%, week on week (WoW), in week 40 (30 September to 6 October) to US$2.84 per kilo – their highest level this year – thanks to increases from Asia Pacific (+1%), Africa (+2%) and Central & South America (CSA, +5%) origins. And a +2% WoW increase in contract rates from Asia Pacific also helped drive a +2% WoW increase in the worldwide full-market average of spot and contract rates to US$2.65 per kilo. Rates and demand rise further in September as strong peak looms Worldwide air cargo rates and tonnages edged up further in the final full week of September and the month as a whole, ahead of what is expected to be a strong peak season, according to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data. After contracting by -2% the previous week as a result of national holidays in China, South Korea, and Chile, total global chargeable weight rebounded in week 39 (23-29 September) with a +2% week-on-week (WoW) increase, raising worldwide tonnages in week 39 to around +10% above their equivalent levels this time last year. That WoW increase in week 39 included traffic rebounding from Asia Pacific (+6%) and from Central & South America (CSA, +4%) – a recovery effect from the holidays the previous week. Combined with an increase from Middle East & South Asia (MESA, +2%) origins, these increases more than compensated for -2% WoW declines from Europe and North America. Autumn festivals cause mid-September dip in tonnages from Asia Pacific Global air cargo tonnages dipped by around -3% in week 38 (16-22 September), week on week (WoW), with the declines caused mainly by national holidays in China, South Korea, and Chile, according to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data. The worldwide -3% fall in flown chargeable weight was mainly driven by Asia Pacific origins, from where a -6% WoW decline in tonnages was responsible for almost three quarters (73%) of the overall global decrease. This Asia Pacific drop was mainly due to the seasonal effects of mid-autumn or harvest festival holidays in various parts of East Asia – taking place this year from 16 to 18 September, within week 38. Bangladesh and Japan rates soar as disruptions persist Soaring air cargo spot rates from Bangladesh and Japan and a surge in tonnages from Dubai have further boosted an already buoyant air cargo market in the first half of September, according to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data. Worldwide air cargo tonnages flown increased by +4% in week 37 (9-15 September), week on week (WoW), driven by a +5% increase from Asia Pacific origins, a +6% increase from Central & South America (CSA), and a rebound of +10% from North America origins, linked to Labor Day on 2 September.
