Celebration time! We’re pleased to announce the promotion of two of our team members to Associate Partner - a first in our firm’s journey! Many congratulations to our colleagues Carol Birungi and Eka Bali on this well-deserved appointment! Your dedication, expertise, and vision will support African businesses to flourish and create sustainable change in Sub-Saharan Africa. “Carol and Eka’s promotion is a new milestone for us, marking a significant step in our firm’s development. It highlights our commitment to nurturing our talented people and building strong local teams that can grow our investments across frontier markets in Africa,” says Jarl H., one of our Partners. Carol joined us four years ago as a Financial Controller in Uganda and has since become a cornerstone of our team, overseeing our Uganda office, finances, operations, compliance, investor relations, portfolio and people management. We love how she gets stuff done with a smile! Eka joined us in 2016 in Kinshasa as an Investment Analyst, where he built a strong record in deal sourcing and execution and rose to Senior Investment Associate. He has successfully led more than 15 transactions across sectors, but Eka is also experienced in portfolio management and stakeholder engagement. This year he moved to Lusaka to set up and lead our Zambian office. He loves to work with talented entrepreneurs. And we love all the energy he brings to our team! Thank you Natasha Sweeney for the photos. #leadership #impactinvesting #frontiermarkets #Africa
Over ons
XSML Capital are partners in growth for entrepreneurs in frontier markets in Africa. We provide expertise, network, and bespoke financing, geared to nurture local talent and bring durable prosperity in underserved markets. Our vision is to create a pan-African investment firm that is the capital provider of choice for growing small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). Filling the credit gap SMEs are the lifeblood of economies across the world. African economies are no different. But African entrepreneurs struggle to get affordable growth capital. This withholds them from scaling their business and unleashing the full potential of their education, skills, and creativity. This impedes the continent’s economic development. Local teams in Angola, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia For more than a decade, XSML (eXtra, Small, Medium, Large) has been investing in SMEs in challenging markets. Our teams in Kampala, Kinshasa, Luanda, Lusaka and Nairobi help to scale small businesses towards medium and large enterprises by providing tailored financing and expertise. Unique market position We provide debt, equity and mezzanine finance allowing us to customize our financing. In our markets, we are often the only investor who focuses on companies across sectors needing investments ranging from USD 300k to 10m. We keep strict ESG standards, give investees support to improve ESG implementation and focus on gender equality. 14-year track record Since 2010, we have invested in more than 75 enterprises. With our feet firmly on the ground, we build extensive market knowledge, scout the best opportunities and stay close to our investments. This generates attractive financial returns for our investors, who are leading development banks and dedicated impact investors. In March 2024, we launched our 4th fund, ARF IV, with a 1st close of US$ 98.7m. The new funding allows us to double our investments and impact over the coming years and follow investees into new markets.

Congratulations to the Dutch Good Growth Fund on their 10th anniversary. The fund has been instrumental to many emerging fund managers investing in SMEs in underserved markets and in supporting local ecosystems. You can read all about the fund's achievements in the report. And we're happy to get a special mention in the introduction, :). DGGF was one of our investors in our second and third fund. #SMEfinance #impactinvesting #frontiermarkets @Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken
🎊 Celebrating 10 years of impact with DGGF 🎊 DGGF - Financing Local SMEs has been committed to enhancing access to finance for the 'missing middle' SMEs, driving sustainable development and supporting underserved entrepreneurs, including women, youth, and entrepreneurs in fragile states. Fair point by our colleague Eka Bali following his participation in the Zambia Impact Investment Summit #ZIIS2024. Helping to bridge the potential knowledge gap between capital seekers and providers is an important reason for us to participate in conferences like this. #impactinvesting #responsiblefinance #frontiermarkets
🌟 Reflections on My Session at the Zambia Impact Investment Summit #ZIIS2024🌍 Last week was busy for me both professionally and personally, and I wish I could have shared my feedback from the ZIIS panel discussion sooner. Nonetheless, here I am! I had the privilege of representing XSML Capital at the #ZIIS2024, discussing “Navigating Zambia’s Business Landscape: Challenges and Opportunities in Accessing Finance and Support for Growth” alongside esteemed panelists. A key takeaway from our discussion is the urgent need to bridge the financial literacy gap between capital seekers and providers. Improving this understanding fosters better communication, allowing both parties to engage more meaningfully. Often, communication breakdowns arise when capital providers explain their reasons for not investing, leaving capital seekers confused due to differing perspectives on investment structures. I believe that enhancing financial literacy on both sides can create more opportunities for growth. Thank you #NABII for allowing me to participate in this important conversation, and I look forward to continuing these discussions! #ImpactInvesting #FinancialLiteracy #Zambia #BusinessGrowth #InvestmentOpportunities

Congratulations to the Dutch Good Growth Fund (DGGF), one of our investors in the African Rivers Fund (ARF) and ARF III, on their tenth anniversary. Thank you for being so supportive of our growth as a fund manager. Watch the video to meet Innocente Mbemba Lukowa, one of our investment associates, showing how our investments in #DRC contribute to local growth, job creation and better services. She visited the Congo Call Center of First & Future, founded by two women entrepreneurs. By the time we exited our investment in the company, it had grown 10x, while the number of employees had grown from 20 to more than 245 people. #impactinvesting #SMEfinance #jobcreation

Our fourth fund hits the ground running! In the first six months of African Rivers Fund IV (ARF IV) we have committed one-fifth (20.9%) of the USD 98.7m we have raised so far. Since we launched the fund in March, we committed almost USD 21m to eight #SMEs, with tickets ranging from USD 500k to USD 6m. ➡️ We welcomed five new clients in #Angola, the #DRC and #Uganda ➡️ Our first investment in real estate development in Uganda ➡️ Two investments in packaging companies in Uganda ➡️ Two investments in food wholesalers in the DRC, a food retailer and a non-food and wholesale and retail company ➡️ A large investment in an Angolan food import and processing company Our pipeline is filled with many more impactful investments. And we’re close to onboarding new investors. If you’re an impact investor interested in supporting economic development and job creation in some of Africa’s #frontiermarkets, we’d love to hear from you. #impactinvesting #SMEfinance #sustainablefinance
