Time to tackle the myth that there are “no silly questions.” We all know that there are silly questions, offensive questions, and harmful questions, especially when these questions come from donors or travelers and are directed to people who have experiences trauma. To help bridge the gaps, create dialogue between those seeking and those giving grants, two comprehensive surveys have been launched: One for grant seekers and one for grant makers. #icymi Lifting up our conversation with Solome Lemma from Thousand Currents, answering this question, "What's the role for international grantmakers in decolonizing philanthropy?" by redefining our ideas of "capacity," "impact," and "scale." “Colonized philanthropy shows up strongly in our ideas around capacity, around impact and scale, all of which are coded words that we often use to make decisions about who is supported, and who is not. And all of which has detrimental effects when it comes to communities who are on the frontlines who often aren’t supported because of assumptions around capacity, impact, and scale. We often ask, particularly when it comes to international philanthropy…: 'Can they scale?' And that’s because our idea of scale is limited to size, and what we at Thousand Currents do is really expand our vision of what scale is. And we think there is scale of depth, there is scale to be reached by going deep into an issue or into a community because the complex challenges that communities face, or that issues require, actually will need time to address and resolve. So there’s scale of depth and there’s also scale of influence. This year has seen many wins for our country’s child nutrition policies, from a funding increase for WIC to the enactment of a permanent summer lunch program through Summer EBT in many states. Now we have the opportunity to secure a win for kids participating in SNAP. The 2024 Farm Bill reauthorization provides a chance to significantly impact the health and nutrition of the over 41 million people who participate in SNAP. That includes millions of kids, because 4 in 10 SNAP participants are children under age 18. During the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers responded to the increased need for food assistance by increasing SNAP benefits. But after those increases expired in 2023, roughly 1 in 4 participating households reported they did not have enough to eat. Here are our recommendations at RWJF for making sure SNAP continues to benefit all those who need it. These changes, if adopted, could improve health and nutrition for millions of people. Are you concerned about how the election could negatively impact nonprofit fundraising in 2024? 😬 This article provides several helpful suggestions to keep your communications plan nimble around the volatile election cycle 🧭 I’d add two more things: 1️⃣ DAFs can not be used to donate to c4s or political campaigns - generally only 501(c)3s are DAF eligible ✅ So with DAF fundraising, you’re not “competing” with other possible use of funds 🤩 It’s a critical year to more proactively engage with DAF fundraising as a buffer against those possible election impacts 🛡️ DAF Day is on October 10th for a reason! It gives every nonprofit a shared event to activate more of those $230 billion in DAFs set aside for charitable giving 🙌🏼 2️⃣ I think the biggest threat to nonprofit fundraising success and donor participation is not a high dollar election, it’s apathy 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m optimistic that the increased passion and energy around this election will energize people to be engaged in society more broadly ⚡️ With more hope, comes a greater likelihood of believing in nonprofit causes and taking action to support them 💪🏽 Maybe we can find more ways to speak to that increased hope with our fundraising efforts instead of fearing distraction? 💞 #nonprofit #fundraising #philanthropy

Who will be the superpowers of philanthropy in the next 25 years? Who will have the capacity and resources to influence social, economic, and political arenas? The answer is women. Historically, women have always played crucial roles in philanthropy. Early social service work was seen as “women’s work.” Female philanthropy started with parochial institutions, where nuns, deaconesses, and women of all faiths offered comfort to the marginalized in their communities. Now, with women holding more than half of private wealth in the U.S. and the capacity to influence global change, their impact is poised to grow exponentially. Despite progress, support for women's and girls' organizations remains low, receiving just 1.8% of charitable giving. However, women are stepping up to fill this gap, often giving broadly, holistically, and collectively. They focus on aligning their passion with their resources, working collaboratively, and demanding transparency about the impact of their contributions. Women’s philanthropy offers vast opportunities: from supporting traditional nonprofits to becoming angel investors and engaging in impact investing. The Hive Fund under the leadership of Erin Rogers, Melanie Allen, and their incredible team is the best of philanthropy. Other funders should take note: ✅ Make multi-year, general operating grants; ✅ Be bold, take risks (philanthropy is society’s risk capital); ✅ Trust the leaders and communities on the ground doing the work; ✅ Use your unique position in the ecosystem to foster coalitions and networks, utilizing grants to incentivize and reward collaboration. Not rocket science, and yet, in so many places it seems philanthropy does not embrace these approaches. #philanthropy #leadership

Insightful article on the mental health needs of young people right now. Thanks to the folks at the Center for Effective Philanthropy for sharing. Some key takeaways for donors: 1. Youth don't need to be told how they are feeling. Rather, they need spaces in which they can claim agency over their experience. Community-based youth organizations offer all the necessary conditions for this: trust, mentorship, and choice. 2. Mental health work is already happening in community-based organizations. The work that needs to be done is not transformational, but translational. To effectively plug in to the mental health work being done at youth-serving organizations, donors need to rethink and reframe their language. 3. Youth mentors - teachers, coaches, program leaders, etc. - are on the forefront of supporting young peoples' mental health. However, many practitioners in this space are not trained to identify and triage. For donors interested in supporting youth mental health, providing flexible funding for staff trainings is a ready made opportunity to have a tangible, scalable impact on a major unmet need. https://lnkd.in/eDQyuysc
