How do you make our customers happy?

By developing, promoting, implementing and executing a Health, Safety, Environment and Quality strategy that optimally mitigates operational risks and activates a culture where safety is in our standard way of working. A hugely challenging role, if only because – offices aside – we run a variety of warehouses, and process a vast number of products, some of which come with strict regulatory requirements. Moreover, we don’t ‘just’ want to ensure the safety of our 2.800 colleagues and those employed by our partners, we also subscribe to the highest environmental standards. Can you, given those challenges and taking into account that this is a new position within our organization – create, implement and execute a best-in-class HSEQ strategy?

The biggest challenge

While related, HSE and Q, are distinct topics. Which means that different capabilities are needed to maximize each team’s impact. How do you define the team boundaries? How do you boost craftsmanship, given the different areas of expertise? Team complexities aside, when it comes to HSEQ, success calls for adoption of strategies by managers, coworkers and external stakeholders alike. Which HSEQ approach works for us? And how do you (and your leaders) drive commitment and traction for the initiatives? Lastly, ‘failure is simply not an option’, because that can majorly impact our compliance, reputation, feeling of safety, and – consequently – our performance.

What You’ll Do As Manager HSEQ

You’ll be onboarded in the management team of Logistics, but while logistics (warehouses, transportation) will be your main focus area, the scope encompasses the entire organization. Examples include People& who promote a safe and inclusive work culture, departments that oversee product compliance, and colleagues that zoom in on ESG-topics. That said, your team (5 direct reports, one indirect report, and a flexible pool of advisors) runs with a large degree of autonomy and independence. Business perspectives matter. But shouldn’t detract from HSEQ goals and ambitions.

It’s up to you to develop strategies that ensure compliance in the areas of working conditions, hazardous substances, permits and food safety. And to coach and inspire the team to excellently execute those strategies. From a Health & Safety perspective, you need to set up a framework that stimulates a safe and healthy (work) environment for employees, temporary workers, contractors and visitors. Safety shouldn’t be a byline, but factor into each action and decision. At all our sites. As for Quality, we expect you to set up and support a food safety management system that not only aligns with HACCP, but meets or exceeds customer expectations, continually. Lastly, we look to you for ‘environmental guidance’. How can we remain fully compliant? And how do we eliminate risks to people and the environment? To reiterate the importance of the position, you’ll report directly to a Senior Director , and will collaborate with Heads and MT’s of various departments, as well as counterparts at relevant external stakeholders, including Ahold Delhaize’s Global Safety and Global Food Safety teams.
