Cancer remains one of the leading health challenges for women, with breast and cervical cancers accounting for a significant share of cancer-related mortality. However, 40% of cancers can be prevented, and the EU Cancer Mission is prioritizing research and innovation to improve early detection, treatment, and survivorship. EU-funded projects like MammoScreen Project and MELIORA EU Horizon Project are at the forefront of this transformation: - MammoScreen is pioneering a radiation-free microwave imaging system for breast cancer detection. This AI-supported, non-invasive technology aims to improve early diagnosis, particularly in dense breast tissue, where traditional mammography can be less effective. - MELIORA is advancing personalized breast cancer prevention and lifestyle interventions using AI-driven behavioral change models. The project integrates digital tools, clinical risk assessment, and tailored recommendations to support women at high risk, patients and survivors, empowering them to take proactive steps in prevention. Investing in research means investing in better care, better survival rates, and stronger healthcare systems. When we think of glaciers, we may imagine icy terrain. But glaciers are present in other regions too – and the fact that they are melting is cause for concern. With 272 billion tonnes of ice disappearing every year - leading to rising sea levels and threatening drinking water sources - preserving glaciers is vital. Read about the EU-funded research putting a freeze on melting glaciers. #WorldWaterDay #Glacier2025 #WorldGlacierDay

The average time spent by children aged 9-15 on social media has more than doubled since 2010, with more than 80% using it daily. Children and adolescents are in a critical phase of socio-emotional and brain development, making them more susceptible to the impact of social media. However, there is currently limited scientific evidence on the impacts of these technologies on young people. Our researchers use a multidisciplinary approach, combining technical expertise with knowledge of child development, education, and policy, to help us understand these issues and support the EU efforts to regulate social media and protect minors online. Between 23% and 44% of EU and UK agricultural lands are at risk of losing organic carbon in their topsoil, our latest study reveals. 🌱📉 Soils are a crucial carbon reservoir, with EU agricultural topsoil alone containing over ten times the CO2 of current EU annual total greenhouse gas emissions. However, the climate crisis has increased the loss of soil organic carbon. This could pose a significant threat to soil productivity and climate resilience, as organic carbon is essential for maintaining soil structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient supply. Our study identifies targeted, more effective carbon management practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change and enhance food security.
