    Designer

#DesignForAll #NextBillionUsers #Equidade #Acessibilidade #Inclusão  #UserExperience #ImpactoSocial #DesignUniversal

A common mindset difference between product management and UX: product management tends to see the user experience as an expression of features whereas UX tends to see features as an expression of the experience. #userexperience Original AI image created with Midjourney

figure 1.a Animal Dominance Behavior in The Holy Triad of Product Design illustrates a 'Current state' of where we're at today in 'Product Design' regarding a decades-long power struggle between Product, Engineering, and Design. I should probably animate the triangle and these power positions over time as it will probably be a 'total laugh riot,' and would also help show how these 3 business partner affiliates across a typical Product team 'Act Out' the natural tensions being felt in the org &/or in the industry. In this most recent 'Episode' in Product Design's History for Digital Product Development, Product JUST took over the whole shebang, pretty much pushing Engineering into the No. 2 position while simultaneously either disempowering Design or completely knocking it out of the picture [ meaning, in some org's right now, the official role of Design has been eliminated as a job in the company and Product has grabbed the reigns ( mssplng here very purposeful ) because ... well ... during Covid they realized that all Design does is use Figma and Miro ( or MURAL ) and so, 'Hey, I can do 'The Fun Stuff' and Figma is 'free,' so 'Gimme that!'' Product takes over UX. The only trouble is ... gee whiz ... uhm, you need Design to be there to advocate for the human beings that will / are using your Products, Services and Experiences. Without a vibrant and empowered UX Team, you've basically eliminated one of the only forces within an organization to stand up for quality, integrity, and excellence in what we're crafting and releasing into the world. Without Design, Accountability to People in the world slips into a huge messy puddle of goopy schlock at a disastrous oil spill — that's the metaphor that's comin' to mind for me, at least. I will create variations of this Political Power Gap Diagram to show more historical context at times when Engineering had taken the Dominator spot and analyze what kinds of outcomes came out of THAT particular triangulation in Product Design ... and maybe another one, when, for the briefest tiny span of time Design actually had grabbed the Dominator spot and what the quality of outcome differential was during that blip in time ( right around 2010 to 2012 or 2013, not exactly sure ... your mileage may vary ). We'll be back ... right after these messages ... #powertriangle #diagram #gorilladominance #productandenganduxohmy #whatjusthappened #whyarewehereatthemoment #howdowemeasurethis #doesanybodyactuallycareaboutthisstuff #politicalnonsense #helpmeoutherepeople #showmetheprototype #makeitpretty #lipstickonthepig #exchangingglances #experiencing #openContainer #thoughtleadership #process #processimprovement #processanalysis #teamdynamics #teamdynamicanalysis #allathatjazz #donotRewirewithAI #preserveourhumanness

For anyone currently swimming in the deep end with me, currently searching for your next industry gig and facing challenging times — I highly recommend listening to this half hour UX & Coffee with Jennifer Romano, Phd and Rebecca Destello. Hearing Rebecca's layoff story and the confidence shock it triggered really helped me feel a lot less alone with what I was experiencing. I took it really hard at first and I am still recovering in a lot of ways. Rebecca's willingness to authentically express the dark places we can all go to at times is really moving — and I think sharing in this deeply human way can help release us all from feeling overwhelmed and stuck. Jennifer and Rebecca then talk about the strategies and journey that's led Rebecca back to working at Meta. Of course, setting up coffee chats like this one help keep us all connected and in community with each other. Reaching out for peer portfolio reviews, practice interviews, and digging into finding the new types of organizations and work that truly inspire you can all keep us hopeful and engaged and inspired. There's so much more work for us all to do. Don't let The Dip getchya down. And if you're down — reach out to people in your network and help lift each other up. Good things are on the horizon for all of us.

Great exposition of why a certain set of #AI tools for #UX work doesn't work (and as I have said elsewhere, probably never will work, even after the inevitable advances in AI, which will improve many other tools): the use of AI to avoid talking to users. It's sad how many people dislike this essential element in #userResearch: the actual users. I look even more forward to the next installments in this series, where Nudelman will comment on what does work!

Gekwalificeerd user experience designer, past UX toe voor non-profit

In February I finished the last book of the recommended reading list for my UX design studies. As I added the last book on top of the stack on the shelf in my study, I was so pleased with and for myself, I took a picture and posted it on LinkedIn. The response: over 30,000 views, nearly 600 reactions and nearly 40 comments that followed, took me by surprise. Thus I decided I had to do something with this. And here it is is, introducing: “My stack of books.” I’m curious to what you think of my initiative. UX Design Institute #uxdesign #neverstoplearning
