  • 📜 Feature Article: Welcome to this week's Feature Article! I had the pleasure of speaking with Gijs Van Der Velden from MX3D about the many opportunities that Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) offers for reducing lead times for a wide range of industries. With delivery times for urgently required products such as valves, pumps, pressure vessels, or fittings in exotic alloys extending to weeks or even months, a speedier supply chain would save money and headaches. Key issues Gijs discusses are: 👉 WAAM systems can produce metal components in near-net shapes, offering significant reductions in cost and lead times, material efficiency, and local, on-demand manufacture 👉 It's ideal for manufacturing equipment in specialty materials as well as special use, low-volume items. 👉 With printing on demand, WAAM systems enable valve bodies, pump impellors, unique piping components etc to be printed immediately. Industry standards An often-raised question when discussing WAAM is whether sufficient standards are available. This is a topic Mr Van der Velden is keen to address. “There are already general standards such as API-20S and DNV-BT-203 that allow end users to utilise metal AM in their production. There is also a more specific standard ASME Section IX that allows 3D printing in our special way." • 🛠️ Technical Article - Exploring 32-Inch CRA-Lined Pipes for Offshore & CCUS Applications In the world of corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) lined pipes, the Mechanically Lined Pipe (MLP) stands out as a cost-effective choice among solid CRA pipes and CRA-clad alternatives. With a track record of reliability and performance in the oil and gas sector, MLP offers a compelling solution. A recent study bu Cladtek delved into key performance indicators for 32-inch CRA-lined pipes, focusing on crucial aspects like bending resilience and hydro-testing efficacy. The investigation encompassed: 👉 The intricacies of manufacturing Mechanically Lined Pipes 👉 The eco-friendly advantages of CRA-Lined Pipes compared to CRA-Clad Pipes 👉 Findings from coating simulations, thermal assessments, and comprehensive bending tests The findings underscore the viability of 32-inch CRA-lined pipes for offshore and subsea operations, including applications in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). This reinforces their pivotal role in revolutionising contemporary pipeline infrastructure. • 🛠️ BUTTING Group expands plant engineering services BUTTING has significantly expanded its range of services in plant engineering by opening a new engineering office. The aim of this strategic development is to increase service quality, offer a broader product portfolio and add upstream processes to the value chain. The integration of the engineering offering marks the company's entry into plant engineering projects at an earlier stage. The shift from the traditional build-to-print approach to a broader vertical range of manufacture makes it possible to design planning and production processes more efficiently and to offer customized solutions from a single source. The new range of services includes on-site measurement, 3D modelling for visualisation and planning, P&ID creation for process documentation, deriving isometrics for precise production documents, and calculating steel, piping and container designs (pressure-free and pressurized). 👉 The more comprehensive integration along the value chain results in shorter project durations, fewer interfaces and optimized planning security for our customers. Mr Jens Nitschke, an experienced expert in plant construction, is managing the engineering office in Oberursel, Germany. He is supported by a team of seven specialists, consisting of piping engineers, mechanical designers and steel construction designers with many years of experience in international plant construction. • ✨ Feature Story: 18m long high-strength tubes for conveyor systems 🛠️ This week’s Feature Story features a project in the Netherlands which relied on 18-metre stainless steel tubes to provide a lasting, economical solution for a large conveyor system. De Regt Conveyor Systems, a company specialised in developing and constructing internal transport systems and storage facilities, designed and built a conveyor system project from Stalatube high-strength stainless steel tubes for Verbrugge International. The project required hollow sections with specific strength due to the 18-meter free span of the structures.   Key points covered in the article include: 👉 Details of the 350-meter-long closed-frame construction containing multiple conveyor belts. 👉 Smart design: The weight of an 18-meter-long hollow section posed a challenge during the design process. This led to discussions about utilising Stalatube high-strength materials. 👉 Overview of the manufacturing and process, which had to meet tight deadlines.    De Regt designed, fabricated, welded, and installed the conveyor system. They chose high-strength stainless steel due to its strength, lightweight, 18-meter special lengths, corrosion resistance, and the requirement for just-in-time delivery. The demanding project met the customer’s and the end customer’s requirements. • 🛠️ Technical Article: CO2 emissions associated with stainless steels – facts and reflections The stainless steel industry consistently works to reduce its CO2 emissions. Industry direct and indirect emissions have, due to solid industry improvement efforts, progressively reduced over the last decade. However, in order to assess the overall emissions picture when using stainless steel and other materials, it is imperative to also determine the emissions throughout a product’s life, i.e., from ‘cradle to grave’. Only through this approach can a valid materials comparison be made. ✨ Highlights of this article from world stainless association include:   🔧 What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and why are they important? 🔧 The vital role of scrap in reducing emissions 🔧 The significance of material lifecycle emissions 🔧 How stainless steel can be the material with the lowest CO2 emissions by using the example of water bottles.   Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ew8cjit2 Tim Collins Jo Claes #sustainability #zeroemissions #environment #greensteel #cra #stainless
