Curious about building a thriving career in public or global health? Follow along as we continue to recap insights from our #PanelofPossibilities! Today’s top insights address questions from participants on educational and professional qualifications needed for a career in #globalhealth or #publichealth. 🎓 Degrees aren’t a minimum requirement! - Many people in our area of work come from very different professional backgrounds (science, engineering, clinical, etc) and never did a specific Master’s in global or public health. - An MPH isn’t everything! Fields like #epidemiology, #healthpolicy, #anthropology, or #development also provide the specialized expertise that could help you stand out where it matters. - Pick your degree strategically or leverage the one you’ve got for a fulfilling career that aligns with the specific impact you want to make. 🔄 Don't Be Afraid to Pivot! - Many of our panellists shared stories about shifting mid-career, from medicine to epidemiology, from management to digital health. - Want to switch to public/global health from another field? No problem! Each career path is unique, and your experience might just be what the field needs. - Your transferable skills, combined with your passion for health, could count for more than you think! 🌱 Continuous Learning is Essential! - Can’t do a full degree program? That’s okay! Certifications in data science, project management, monitoring & evaluation, or humanitarian health can give your resume a competitive edge. - Don’t forget: short courses and online learning platforms — like the WHO’s OpenWHO — offer great opportunities to level up your skills on the go. Looking to figure out which qualification path makes the most sense for you? Alanda Health’s course, “Thrive. How to build a meaningful career in global and public health,” has actionable insights to help you carve out your unique journey. No matter your starting point, the global health field needs you!

It was a pleasure to host our webinar guests last week! Eva Turk, Jennifer Gilbertson, Valérie Balvert, and Bruno Rocha provided valuable insights for young professionals and those seeking to enter the field of global and public health. Check out some key takeaways below: 📚 Your academic background doesn’t need to be a “perfect fit”: While having an academic background in public and global health is helpful, professionals from a variety of different backgrounds can utilize their skills in organizations that work in public and global health. 🌍 Take time to explore your interests: Participating in internships, volunteering, or different projects to learn more about a particular area of the field is a great way to learn about what you like and what passions you want to explore further. 🤝 Mentorship is key: Building connections with those in your work and education who have more experience than you can offer support in navigating your professional goals and decisions 📊 Specialist vs. Generalist - it’s your choice!: Finding a niche that you are passionate about is a great way to set yourself apart when applying for new roles. However, becoming a highly skilled generalist can also widen your horizon of available opportunities. Have more questions about kickstarting your career in public and global health? If you are hearing more and more about the Oropouche virus, and have questions, we've got you covered. 🦠 What is Oropouche virus disease, and why is it on the radar now? Oropouche virus disease is considered a neglected tropical disease. It is transmitted by an insect called a midge, and through some mosquito species. Cases are common in the Amazon region in Brazil. Recently, however, over 8000 cases have been confirmed (almost ten times more than in 2023) including in areas with no previous history of the disease, and in five countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, and Peru). In addition, for the first time, cases of potential transmission of the virus during pregnancy have been reported, which may be related to miscarriages, fetal death and congenital abnormalities. ⚕️What are the symptoms? If you catch the Oropouche virus, symptoms are similar to having a bad flu – fever, headaches, muscle pain, and tiredness. The disease can be easily confused with dengue or chikungunya. In severe cases, there can be neurological symptoms. 🌎 Why is it spreading now? Some likely suspects include climate change, deforestation, and rapid, unplanned urbanization, among others. These things make it easier for people to come into contact with the midges that spread the virus. 🛡 How can I protect myself? While there isn’t a vaccine, nor specific treatment (just treatment of symptoms), there are ways to lower your chances of infection. The CDC recommends using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and using fine mesh screens on all your windows and doors if you live in an area at risk or where cases have been detected. Help make a difference: Stay informed and share these important prevention tips with your community. The more we know, the more we can do to stop it from spreading! Do you have any questions about Oropouche’s recent rise? Let us know in the comments below!

Did you know adults and children learn differently? 🧠Malcolm Knowles introduced Adult Learning Theory (Andragogy) in 1968 to explain these cognitive differences. 💡Knowles identified five key principles related to how adults prefer to learn, and they are quite common sense when we think about how we prefer to learn during trainings and seminars: - Self-direction: Do you prefer to chart your own learning path or let others set it for you? - Lived experience: Do you appreciate it when you can bring in past experiences and share them in a training or apply them to the new skils you are learning? - Orientation to Learning: Do you find it easier to engage with the material when content directly relates to solving real-world problems that you are facing? - Motivation: What drives you to learn new things – personal growth, career advancement, or something else? - Readiness to learn: Do you feel more prepared to learn when the knowledge immediately applies to your life or work? At Alanda Health, we try hard to apply these principles in our global health training programs to ensure impactful, engaging, and collaborative learning. Learn more at alandahealth.com! How well did the last course you took apply these principles? And how does it feel when they’re not applied? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
