𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗯𝘆𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲: 𝗟𝗔𝗞𝗦𝗩𝗘𝗟 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 Developed by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway, LAKSVEL is the standard protocol for welfare scoring in salmon and trout farming in Norway. It has also been recognized in other regions worldwide. Launched in November 2022, the Aquabyte WISE Welfare product has quickly become an essential tool for our customers. Powered by machine learning, it provides farmers with valuable insights into the welfare of the fish in their pens. Although LAKSVEL serves as the foundation of WISE Welfare, our product goes beyond this protocol. In addition to the indicators defined in LAKSVEL, WISE Welfare provides users with additional data and insights on eye welfare, fin damage, gill damage, and jaw deformities. It also tracks body wound status, indicating whether wounds are active or healing. The additional data and insights from WISE Welfare are essential for farmers in making decisions that enhance fish welfare and drive profitability. The 4th 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 took place in the State of Paraná, Brazil, in late September. Covering all sectors of the aquaculture and fishery industries, the conference had 4,000 attendees and featured more than 40 invited speakers from 18 countries. Representing Aquabyte was Gabriel Coelho de Moura from our Chilean office, who delivered a talk titled 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, highlighting how data-driven fish farming enhances welfare and boosts production efficiency. #datadrivenfishfarming #datadrivenfishwelfare #aquaculturesouthamerica

Our Insight Manager, Kristin Aase, was invited to speak at the Lagarlíf Aqua-Ice conference in Reykjavik, Iceland, on Tuesday. This year’s conference, which saw record-breaking attendance, included a session dedicated to discussing fish welfare. Kristin’s presentation highlighted how the high-quality data from our system – characterized by complexity, frequency, and precision – is used to uncover welfare trends and challenges in the pen, providing farmers with the insights needed to take action. The Norwegian organization Dyrevernalliansen (Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance) recently published their report 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘥 – 𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘬 𝘰𝘨 𝘭ø𝘴𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘥, 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘥ø𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘨 ø𝘬𝘵 𝘣æ𝘳𝘦𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘵. In this report, we, along with a selection of fish farming companies and suppliers, are recognized for our contributions and efforts toward improving fish welfare. From the report’s summary (translated from Norwegian): "Many suppliers to the industry are developing effective tools that enable new ways to prioritize fish welfare, both in daily operations and during specific procedures." With our technology, fish farmers are replacing invasive manual procedures with automatic lice counting and continuously monitoring the welfare of the fish in their pens. These are just two of the many significant steps the industry is taking to further improve fish welfare, reduce mortality, and promote sustainability. 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗯𝘆𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:  𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗹𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Today, we are introducing a major product advancement that empowers farmers to make smarter, data-driven decisions throughout the entire fish lifecycle. Using advanced algorithms and enhancements to our camera system, the Aquabyte platform now accurately measures biomass and performs welfare scoring for smolt as small as 50 grams. - It’s fantastic that our customers can now monitor fish from the start of the smolt phase.
