The event featured presentations on relevant areas such as Feed, Genetics, Research, and Production - all designed to facilitate the sharing and exchange of best practices for salmon production in freshwater. Thommy R Holmvåg, Commercial Lead Genetics at Benchmark Genetics presented the latest updates on salmon ova production and discussed incubation temperature. Our Sales & Documentation Manager, Stein Johannessen held a presentation about the significance of Benchmark Lønningdal - the heart of our breeding program for the SalmoBreed strain and the production of our broodstock and genetic families. Erik Burgerhout from Nofima shared insights from the FHF project SalmoCode, along with recent findings on early life stages in salmon embryo development. Ida Beitnes Johansen from NMBU - Norwegian University of Life Sciences provided an in-depth presentation on how temperature impacts heart health and development in salmon production. Terje Ljones from Framo Aquaculture had a talk about active flow control. Additionally, smolt producers such as Ænes Inkubator AS and Hardingsmolt AS contributed by sharing the latest updates from their RAS facilities and discussing their experiences with technical and biological parameters in their production processes. Kristian Tuff Carlsen from BioMar gave a presentation about the role of feeding in salmon production as one of the most successful factors, and Julie Elise Trovaag, Customer Advisor Land-Based at BioMar, explained what salmon feed is made of. Thank you for joining us at the workshop - we appreciate your participation and hope you found it valuable! 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐩 🦐 Shrimp aquaculture, essential to the global seafood supply chain, has been continuously challenged with infectious disease outbreaks that threaten production stability and, consequently, the economic security of farming communities worldwide🌍 Benchmark Genetics’ research, conducted through a challenge test experiment on a population from its breeding program in Colombia, demonstrates the feasibility of using genetic selection to enhance disease resistance in shrimp. We are thrilled to share our research findings with the aquaculture community and have already implemented these findings into practice, applying genomic selection in its breeding program to produce shrimp lines with improved resistance to co-infection by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) and White Feces Syndrome (WFS) in white-leg shrimp. “This study reinforces our commitment to pioneering genetics-based solutions and highlights our dedication to enhancing the economic and environmental sustainability of shrimp farming worldwide,” said Carlos Lozano, Lead Shrimp & Tilapia Breeding Program at Benchmark Genetics.

This week, the Benchmark team attended the "Smolt Production of the Future" conference in Sunndalsøra, which was a great success🌊 Over two days, more than 150 participants from the aquaculture industry worldwide, the research community, the Norwegian government, and the investment sectors gathered to discuss the future of smolt production based on cutting-edge research. It was fantastic to see how knowledge from research and industry merged, creating a strong foundation for future growth and innovation in sustainable aquaculture🐟 Commercial Director for Salmon at Benchmark, Kate Furhovden Stenerud, held a presentation “Genetics adapted to new forms of operation and innovation” and highlighted how traditional breeding work goes hand in hand with new technology into the future🟠 Even Tronstad Sagebakken, State Secretary at the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries, joined the Smolt Conference and emphasized the critical need to improve fish welfare in Norwegian aquaculture. With alarming mortality rates in 2023, the government is considering new regulations, including potentially pricing poor welfare practices to incentivize sustainable practices and reduce environmental impacts🌍 Collaboration between research institutions, the aquaculture industry, and policymakers will be key to this shift. We at Benchmark look forward to seeing the exciting collaborations that will emerge from these discussions. Thanks to Nofima for organizing such a great event and networking opportunities with aquaculture industry leaders🌊🐟 #benchmarkgenetics #AquacultureInnovation #SustainableFarming #ResearchAndIndustry #SmoltProduction #AquacultureFuture
