Benchmark Genetics' research, conducted through a challenge test experiment on a population from its breeding program in Colombia, demonstrates the feasibility of using genetic selection to enhance disease resistance in shrimp. Notably, the study identifies moderate heritability for resistance to co-infection, underscoring the potential for selective breeding to bolster shrimp health and resilience against these diseases. This study reinforces our commitment to pioneering genetics-based solutions and highlights our dedication to enhancing the economic and environmental sustainability of shrimp farming worldwide.” The value of genetic approaches to sustainable disease prevention continues to grow: https://lnkd.in/dT5gA2-n Carlos Lozano Kahsay Gebremariam Nirea Marcela Salazar Edna Constanza Erazo Bruno Decock Andres Suarez Carolina Penaloza Navarro Ross Houston Hossein Yazdi Benchmark Genetic Services #shrimpfarming #aquaculture #sustainability #genomicselection #benchmarkgenetics

Today, 26 September at the Latin American Aquaculture Congress, that is taking place in Medellin, Colombia Marcela Salazar, Scientific Director of Benchmark Genetics in Colombia together with Nélida Rodriguez Osorio, PhD. MV, MSC and PhD, from the Genomics and Bioinformatics Unit of the Universidad de la Republica in Uruguay, are presenting “Potential and realities of genomics technologies in aquaculture”. The Aquaculture in Latin America Congress combines LACQUA 2024, The VIII Latin American Conference on Native Fish Farming, and The XI Colombian Congress on Aquaculture. It takes place over September 24-27, 2024, at the Plaza Mayor Convention Centre. This year’s trade fair is the largest trade fair for the aquaculture sector in Colombia, with a range of leading companies represented. Marcela has studied the genetics of the immune response against viral and bacterial infections in humans, shrimp, and inbred strains of mice for more than 20 years. Since 2001 she served as Scientific Director of the Aquaculture Research Centre at CENIACUA, and since 2016 she holds the same position now at Benchmark Genetics Colombia. Her main field of research is the immune response of P. vannamei against viral infections using the white spot syndrome virus as a model and selective breeding of P. vannamei. She is also a board member of Corporación CorpoGen, a non-profit biotechnology research organization in Colombia. #benchmarkgenetics #shrimpfarming #genetics #aquaculture
