📢 WEBINAR: Join us to explore a new ICD-11 Cause of Death app, 3 April at 14:00 CET. This app was created through close collaboration with the World Health Organization and field testing with several Ministries of Health and HISP groups, and has been developed jointly between HISP Vietnam and HISP Centre at University of Oslo. It uses the international form of medical certificate of cause of death as its basis along with the ICD-11 coding system to codify deaths. It does this through the use of the DORIS (WHO Digital Open Rule Integrated Cause of Death Selection) API, allowing you to directly code your causes of death directly in DHIS2. In this webinar, we will provide an overview of the app's features, its functionalities, benefits, and usage. The app will soon be available for download on the DHIS2 app hub, as we near the webinar date. 🗞️ "Public health programs thrive on data. Without accurate reporting, timely analysis, and structured data systems, decision-making becomes an exercise in guesswork. In a country as vast and diverse as Nigeria, with its complex healthcare challenges, fragmented data systems have long hindered efforts to track progress, allocate resources efficiently, and measure intervention impact," said Nigeria-based public health data system expert Adeola Joseph in an article published last week by Techeconomy. "This is where DHIS2 has made a difference—not just as a digital tool, but as a transformational shift in how health data is collected, processed, and utilized," Joseph said. "DHIS2 has redefined the way health professionals engage with data, creating a unified system that allows seamless information flow from remote clinics to national decision-makers." In the article, titled "Optimizing Public Health Data Systems: How DHIS2 is Transforming Data Management in Nigeria," Joseph emphasizes the importance of investing in capacity building, infrastructure improvements, and regular system updates for successful DHIS2 implementations. "The reality is that the future of public health isn’t just about collecting more data—it’s about making better use of the data we already have," he said. "DHIS2 provides the foundation for this transformation, but only when backed by the expertise, commitment, and innovation of those who use it effectively." Do digitalization efforts overemphasize the product and overlook the system? In this week's Morgenbladet newspaper in Norway, University of Oslo (UiO) senior lecturer and researcher Magnus Li writes that digitalization isn't just about developing or acquiring software, but about working actively with organizations as integrated socio-technical systems. "Many projects struggle or fail because they focus too narrowly on delivering software while neglecting the broader system-level work needed to make it function effectively," Li said. "This kind of systems work requires a different approach than traditional product work—it must be experimental and measured by its effects on the organization as a whole. It involves trying out small interventions, learning from their impact, and continuously adapting." Through his work at the UiO Department of Informatics, Li and his colleagues and students explore the fundamental nature of systems work and how it can be organized, including long-term engagement with the DHIS2 ecosystem at the HISP Centre at University of Oslo. 🔎 DHIS2 IMPACT: Enhancing Healthcare Performance in Ethiopia Using DHIS2 Ethiopia’s DHIS2-based national health management information system (HMIS), one of the largest in the world, collects data from more than 30,000 health facilities and drives decisions about budgeting, capacity, and service provision for health programs serving a population of more than 120 million people. “DHIS2 revolutionizes data access, liberating us from HMIS constraints. Previously, accessing data was restricted by time and place. Now, with DHIS2, data is at our fingertips anytime, anywhere, contingent upon stable connectivity. It’s a transformative leap in accessibility and efficiency.” – Regional primary health care unit leader Ethiopia’s national implementation of DHIS2—configured and recently upgraded to v40 through technical support from implementation partner HISP Ethiopia with funding from The Global Fund—provides a model for other countries evaluating DHIS2 as a potential solution for data management and reporting. The authors of the 2024 article in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Development concluded that “Ethiopia’s journey to a unified DHIS2 system demonstrates the potential of Health Information System (HIS) to improve health outcomes when implemented effectively. It also provides valuable insights for other countries considering DHIS2 as their primary data management and reporting tool.” Read more:

🆕 DHIS2 IMPACT: Streamlining donor reporting by sending indicator data directly from DHIS2 The Global Fund and the HISP network have helped countries like Mozambique reduce their manual reporting burden–and improve data quality–through DHIS2 aggregate data exchange. Since 2023, the Global Fund has worked with the core DHIS2 team at the University of Oslo's HISP Centre, and with local groups in the HISP network, to streamline and automate the reporting process with the DHIS2 Data Exchange app and a standardized metadata package for the Global Fund reporting format—making it possible for countries to send key indicators directly from their national HMIS to the central Global Fund repository. “The core of the (ADEx project) is how do we make programmatic decisions faster, while simultaneously strengthening data quality," explained Nicola Hobby, a technical advisor and implementation lead for the Global Fund. As of the end of 2024, Global Fund Aggregate Data Exchange (ADEx) reporting has been rolled out in 12 countries and the results have been positive. Using ADEx has reduced the amount of time countries spend on preparing reports, made it easier to identify and correct data quality issues, and helped to identify data gaps in national HMIS systems that several countries are now working to address.
