We had the privilege of being present at IFC 2024 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil where our Global Commercial Director, Rodrigo Zanolo, shared insights on "Genetic improvement in tilapia: Advances in technology for a more productive and profitable crop". Our tilapia breeding programs are based on best practice and modern technologies from more than 50 years of experience within fish and animal breeding. Field performance for important traits like survival, disease resistance, growth, fillet yield and uniformity has been proven in commercial farms, contributing to a sustainable tilapia industry. IFC (International Fish Congress) is a key event in the aquaculture sector, uniting experts and professionals to exchange knowledge and shape the future of tilapia production, both in Brazil and globally. #IFC2024 #Aquaculture #Tilapia #Genomics #Innovation #Sustainability #AlwaysOneGenerationAhead

Senior Researcher Rajesh Joshi in action at Aqua 2024. He presented the promising results of combining genomic selection and line breeding to improve the performance of tilapia in farming. With this method we are crossing genomic selected tilapia from two different specialised breeding populations/lines to make the preferred product. For example, females from the health and survival line are crossed with males from the growth and yield line. The offspring (fingerlings to the farmers) will have a faster and higher genetic gain compared to using only genomic selected parents. We are happy to share the results from a recent field trial comparing our premium genetic tilapia line, GenoMar 1000, with a market-leading local strain in Brazil. The study was conducted under commercial conditions with a blinded common garden experimental design in both pond and cage production systems. Key Findings: Growth Rate: GenoMar 1000 grew approximately 30% faster than the local strain. Survival and Uniformity: GenoMar 1000 showed better survival rates and more uniform fish at harvest. Economic Analysis: Indicated a 31-36% annual increase in profits with GenoMar 1000. These findings suggest that GenoMar 1000 can significantly improve productivity, profitability, and sustainability in the Brazilian tilapia industry. #Tilapia #Genetics #Genomics #LineBreeding #GenoMar1000 #Sustainability #Brazil #FieldTrial #AquacultureIndustry #Productivity #Profitability #SustainableFarming #WeAreGenoMar #AlwaysOneGenerationAhead
