Minister Rebecca Schulz just announced a $2.8 million investment in Varme Energy to advance Canada’s first-ever waste-to-energy facility with integrated carbon capture and storage. Located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, Varme’s waste-to-energy facility will combust garbage from City of Edmonton landfills to generate electricity on-site and for the grid. Plus, it will include carbon capture and storage technology to sequester carbon emissions from the facility, creating a carbon-negative process. The project will eliminate hundreds of thousands of greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs for Albertans, and add millions of dollars to the province’s GDP. This funding is sourced from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.
