Ever wondered what it is like crossing the equator at sea? Former world champion and two-time Olympic medalist rower Kjetil Borch was onboard our Höegh Target en route to Durban when he went from Pollywog to Shellback. In this update on his journey into shipping, Borch tells the story of how he experienced the maritime milestone of “crossing the line” as it often is referred to within seafaring. "The highlight of the day was when we crossed the equator, and I stepped out onto the deck early in the morning in flip-flops, carefully carrying my freshly brewed morning coffee from the small kitchenette in my quarters," Kjetil Borch says about becoming a Shellback. «From the top deck, I watched the intense yellow sun rise above Equatorial Guinea and the African continent in the east. My thoughts went to my late grandparents, who took this same journey in the early 1950s to begin their new life in Durban, South Africa.” Since his embarking in French Le Havre and the first port call in Swedish Gothenburg, temperatures have risen noticeably. One thing, however, remains a highlight that Borch emphasizes: The camaraderie with the crew. He really enjoys life onboard one of the world’s most advanced PCTC vessels: “The days at sea have settled into a steady rhythm, reminiscent of the ebb and flow of the ocean - much like my earlier training camps. Time passes almost unnoticed, filled with assignments and work that keep me engaged.” Beyond daily routines, Borch’s primary focus on the voyage to Durban has been quality control, assurance, and testing digital solutions onboard. One of the key improvements is a digital checklist for the engine room, enabling real-time feedback and record-keeping - improving safety and efficiency onboard and across the fleet. "During my time onboard, I’ve been amazed by the thoroughness of the crew and how tidy the vessel is. I’ve truly enjoyed being part of this team. I have great respect for the crew." Borch is set to disembark in Durban, while Höegh Target continues its journey to Australia, with Fremantle and Melbourne on its port call list. We will check in with Kjetil Borch again, when he has begun his stint at our Durban office.

Bridging Theory and Practice in Risk Management with students and academics from BI💡⚓️ In an unpredictable world, managing risk is about more than just reacting—it’s about strategic foresight. Today, our CEO, Andreas Enger, discussed risk management in an international setting with students at BI Norwegian Business School. With a strong focus on geopolitical and political risk, as well as challenges related to trade policies, we discussed how Höegh Autoliners navigates these complexities in a global industry. Risk is not just a challenge—it’s an opportunity for innovation and sustainable growth. These students are assessing Höegh Autoliners as a case study, applying theory, sharp analysis, and fresh thinking to real-world business challenges. We can’t wait to see their perspectives! A big thank you to all the students who joined us today, and to Professor Ulf Sverdrup for the invitation and for selecting us as a case study. Collaboration between academia and industry is key to developing new insights, driving innovation, and preparing future leaders for the complexities of global trade.

The time for change is now 🍀 This week, our CEO, Andreas Enger joined discussions with the IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, Dr. Andrew Forrest (Chair & Founder of Fortescue), Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, M.V.O., MBA (CEO of SMI), Hans-Olav Raen (CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia), and other industry leaders to discuss the future of shipping. The timing couldn’t be better. With the IMO working toward the most significant regulatory shift in a generation to cut greenhouse gas emissions, bold action is needed. We fully support the journey to zero emissions—and we’re committed to leading by example, reaching zero by 2040. For us, that journey runs on clean ammonia. Our Aurora Class vessels are the first in the PCTC segment to receive DNV’s ammonia-ready notation. And in 2027, when our first Aurora sets sail powered entirely by clean ammonia, we will eliminate nearly all carbon emissions. This roundtable, hosted by the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI)—founded five years ago by His Majesty King Charles III—brought together global leaders to turn ambition into action. The technology is here. The green fuel is ready. Now, we need clear policies to drive the transition forward. The time for change is now. #SustainableShipping #ZeroEmissions #AuroraClass #CleanAmmonia #IMO #SMI #HöeghAutoliners

Dear Valued Customer, Höegh Autoliners are introducing an updated Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) effective April 2025. This enhanced BAF ensures greater adaptability to future fuel requirements while maintaining transparency and predictability. The revised BAF retains its core function of adjusting for fuel price fluctuations. As liquefied natural gas (LNG) becomes an industry standard for newbuilds, we are now incorporating LNG as a component in the fuel mix. This is a small but crucial step toward integrating alternative fuels, aligning with evolving regulatory requirements and the industry’s long-term carbon reduction goals. All other parameters of the BAF remain unchanged, ensuring continuity for our customers. Over time, additional fuel types may be included to support the transition to lower-emission shipping solutions. This transition is supported by our investment in the Aurora Class vessels, with four delivered and a further eight on order. The Aurora Class features multi-fuel capability, allowing us to offer market leading sustainable solutions to our customers. For customers with ambitious de-carbonisation targets we continue to offer tailor made fuel solutions to reduce carbon footprint across our global trade network. Should you have any questions, please reach out to your local representative. Sincerely yours, Höegh Autoliners

From Olympic Medals and World Championships to Ocean Waves: Kjetil Borch’s New Journey in Shipping 🌊🏅 What comes after a lifetime at the top of elite sports? For two-time Olympic medalist and world champion rower Kjetil Borch, the answer lies at sea. This year, after competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Kjetil embarked on a new adventure—trading rowing sculls for one of the world’s most advanced PCTC vessels, the Höegh Target. As part of the Neste steg Norge (Next Step Norway) program, which supports athletes and military personnel in transitioning to new careers, he has joined Höegh Autoliners as an intern. His journey began in Le Havre, France, where he boarded the Horizon Class vessel. Over the next four weeks, he’ll sail through the English Channel, past Europe’s west coast to Santander and Tangier, before heading down Africa’s western coastline to Durban, South Africa. From there, he will spend time at our Durban office before returning to Norway. Although no stranger to life on the water, Kjetil has been fascinated by the world of deep-sea shipping, from meticulous loading operations to the camaraderie of the Chinese crew onboard. He’s already getting hands-on experience—documenting fire safety protocols, working on digital innovations in collaboration with DNV, and absorbing every lesson along the way. Kjetil’s goal? To explore the many facets of maritime operations and carve out a new career path after elite sports. We are excited to follow his journey with us and welcome him aboard! 🚢 📖 Read more about his experience so far: https://lnkd.in/dPfv3X_W #HöeghAutoliners #Shipping #Logistics #CareerTransition #LifeAtSea #FromAthleteToSeafarer

A Truly Special Sight! The world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carrier, Höegh Aurora, has transited the Panama Canal for the first time! This 82-kilometer journey through one of the world's most crucial waterways is a routine operation—one of 14,000 transits per year and 4–5 for us each month. Yet, witnessing this marvel of maritime engineering navigate such a vital trade route never gets old. Successfully maneuvering a (nearly) 200-meter-long vessel capable of carrying 9,100 cars through the canal is no small feat. It requires precision, concentration, and the expertise of the Panama Canal's dedicated professionals, who make this possible every day. A huge thank you to the canal officials for their skilful assistance! Watch the video to experience this incredible journey—one that spares countless vessels over 10,000 kilometers of extra travel and the perilous Cape Horn route around South America. No matter how many times we do it, transiting the Panama Canal remains an awe-inspiring achievement! Thank you Canal de Panamá!
